Low Odour Kerosene in Australia! Who knew!

I didn't know such a product existed!

I purchased a couple of 1 litre bottles from Ray's Tent City for $9.99 each only to discover Bunnings Warehose have 4 litres for $22.95!!!

It does have a lot less stink than the normal Household Kerosene also sold under this brand that is died blue. (The smelly stuff sells for $5.16 per 1 litre or $14.90 for 4 litres)

Has anyone tried it?

I will let you know how it burns...

Yes I bought a bottle of the other stuff about a year ago smells like Rotorua and if left in the sun for a week or 2 the blue changes to cloudy white.

 

You can buy Rotorua pong by the bottle?

 

As an aside, you can buy Odourless Kerosene (OK).
It's a little bit more expensive, it's used in industry and is ideal if you have non-paraffin liking relations....

Seems a bit spendy for a Gallon of kerosene, but heck if it works why not? I have been buying the Coleman brand stuff in quart size bottles because it is cleaner than diesel. I wonder if the tiki torch stuff that is sometimes called citronella would work, keeps the mosquitos at bay and smells decent.

 

Then again I wonder if that would leave junk in the inner workings of the stove. Just thinking out loud I suppose.

One of the worst stove fettling jobs I've had was fixing a stove that had been run on citronella oil... Every part of the tank and burner was caked with black tar and the burner required hours of soaking in acetone.

Oh good to know before I did that, thanks man! Stands to reason I suppose that the smell good stuff in it would do that.

 

Update!

The low odour kerosene seems to perform well and true to its name did not smell too badly.

This is my freshly fettled Companion Stove (leg reattached, new washers, burner decoked and new caps from the Fettlebox. Even scored an OEM trivet secondhand from a junk shop to replace the missing one!) running on the Diggers Low Odour product!

BTW - What's 4L of Jet A1 worth @Tony Press?

I have tried Lamp Oil here in New Zealand @ $17.50 for 1 litre, supposedly low odour kerosene. It might be low odour for a lamp with a wick, but for an Optimus 111 or 199, it still filled the garage with kero fumes, and I paid extra for the privilege. Normally, kero is about $5.00 or 6.00 per litre. Bah!

Could I ask you what kind of stove that is in your picture? It looks like it has the same handle on the tank that the link to this forum has which says Stockholm. I am just getting started with these awesome stoves, and learning every day.

 

I do see it says companion. All I have is Svea 123, and 123r and some more modern ones like an MSR dragonfly and Optimus Polaris Optifuel.

At my petrol station, I buy Jet A1 from the bowser (marketed as Caltex Home Kerosene) for $1.90 AUD.

I tried our local airfield but they didn't have it - "No jets here mate!"

Caltex Home Kerosene - I'll search for that! I haven't seen kerosene on pump at a servo for many years!

@J41385 as Tony said it's an Australian made Companion produced under license from SVEA of Sweden - the people responsible for your 123! It seems to be a really good running stove!

@SimonFoxxx I'd be nervous about a product made for lamps - likely to have all sorts of flavours and smells added that could be troublesome in a stove.

You won't find Caltex Home Kerosene anywhere except where Jet A1 is sold through an old bowser...

As a matter of fact, the Jet A1 that is sold through the Caltex bowser I go to is imported into Tasmania, and supplied by, BP.

A bowser is the fuel truck at airports, many places the fuel comes to you, not you to the fuel.

In Australia we often call the pump at a gas station that dispenses the fuel a "bowser" except we don't call them "gas stations" - they're "petrol stations" or "service stations" or just "servo's"...

Many years ago it was common for there to be a separate "kero" pump at the "servo" mostly for people who had kerosene heaters but also for other uses such as degreasing car parts.

Now the kerosene is mainly sold as a packaged product
