Picked this up @ a Antique store today but I am not sure what it is or what even to call it.
It has the sunshine logo with a 1 and a 0 on the bottom it says coleman instant light and the usual stuff if any bodys knows a model # I would appreciate it Thanks Wade

    Wade,
That looks like an incomplete lead melter. The burner sure looks like the older type from the Coleman 500 speedmaster.

I tend to agree with Pete on this except that the 454 is not in the nickel as it should be. Coleman did not produce any brass founted stoves or lanterns which were not nickel plated. The one in the photo has had it's plating cleaned off. Cool if you like to polish brass a real b$#^& if you don't.

My suggestion; if more than 5 % of the nickel is gone remove the rest and then craft a pot support and use it. BTW it burns panel wipe, coleman fuel.

I think there is a good chance that brown is the original finish. According to Terry Marsh the example of the 456 he has retains a tiny bit of brown on the collar, which he believes is original. Now on the other hand the green book says it was shipped without nickel plating but doesn't say what the finish was. your burner and the 456 were brothers and have the same burner that ended up on the 500 speedmaster. So I believe they could have come with the same finish. Lance, I just checked and two of my Coleman 500 stoves are Coleman grean painted brass founts. I also have several nickle plated ones. The year of one of lthe brass ones is 1947, I didn't check the other one. I don't believe that anyone stripped them but that they were manufactured unplated. I know of no other brass Coleman founts except the early Colemans modeled after the standard three legged, with pot stand, European stoves. :) :) Gordon

I am pretty sure that the Brown Crackle finish was factory. Over 20% of it was gone so I just stripped it all off and sanded and buffed the fount to Brass. I got it running today and it burns like a Champ!! Not really a back pack stove but a real nice camp or turkey deep frier stove. I have the original grate for it but it was broke and missing a small part. I am going to take it to a welder and have them repair it. dcfn0025tv1.th.jpg
