Alternatively, not harden and change the slot from this typical arrangement...... To this type, with a small chamfer.... This should eliminate the distortion without the hardening process, but , Again, it's a trade off from addition machining time against time saved not hardening
Hi Ray @Longilily , the bottom drawing looks like a good idea. What Tofta suggests is exactly what I tried to do when making my first NRV tool using only hand tools (files and hacksaw). I tried to file the opening so that the width at the opening of the tool is exactly the size of the NRV and slightly tapers out upwards. This way all the force pushes at the lower part of the NRV so the tool won't 'climb' upwards when used. I hope this makes sense, I'm to much of a 'puter Neanderthaler to make a sketch to better explain . The idea is you get a sort of dove tail. All the best, Wim
Tofta, I also would be willing to pay the asking price for a quality NRV tool. I have started a conversation with Stu but haven't heard back. Hope he is well and something good is keeping him occupied. I am just learning about how to fix my stove and everything seems to be quite possible.... except the mysterious NRV at the dark bottom of the inaccessible tube. Sure hope my luck holds until I can get a good tool

There are Angels all around you know – you had better believe it. …. and you seem to have sorted things out. @Longilily I have a Japanese made tool with the business end as in your second drawing – good drawings by the way – but it is soft stainless, and it was quickly worn so it climbs on the NRV head. So clearly too soft, but I do not know enough about machining and production to tell what is best. All the best, e
