Best way to clean rust from a stove tin?

Hi everyone,

What's the best way to remove rust from a stove tin please, I just got an Optimus 80 and got it to run fairly well. The tin is holding up but it has some rust especially inside.

Best way to deal with it please?

Yes, and also at auto parts stores. Just buy enough so that you can submerge the entire tin in the solution and let it soak. Once the rust is completely dissolved simply rinse it off with water, dry it, and immediately coat it with something to prevent it rusting up again.

it doesnt hurt the paint?

 

No it won't hurt the paint but it will take decals right off. I learned that the hard way. You should coat decals with Vaseline before soaking them.

Ospho also works well, and may be carried at some stores that don't have Evaporust. It doesn't remove paint. In fact, it doesn't seem to dry on a painted surface, and has to be wiped off. It leaves a coating on the formerly rusted surface that can be painted if desired.

Many alloy wheel cleaners work as a cheap alternative to surface rust treatments. Look for the ones that contain phosphoric acid, way cheaper than buying Jenolite or other phosphoric acid based rust treatments, but have the same end result in leaving a protective coating which can be painted over after it has been wiped or rinsed and dried.

I have a problem, buying stoves will take me to the cleaners. May need an intervention..:-)

 

After using Evapo-Rust to remove the bulk of the rust I often paint on Ospho and let it dry to stabilize what's left, prevent flash rusting, and prep the surface for painting or waxing. Evapo-Rust removes rust. Ospho converts rust.
