When everything settled down the flame looked like i had stuck a minute candle in the burner. Sounds like a blockage(more likely) or a loss of pressure through leaking seals. If it is a blockage, you may have to replace the wick inside the tank as it could be scorched(from running dry - until there is no fuel left) or have some substance(contaminated fuel) in it that has caused the blockage. If the fuel cap seals are hardened they tend to leak and the pressure is there but insufficient to keep the burner hot enough to keep a blue flame. Are you using white gas(Coleman Fuel)? Cheers, John
Well...no...i used 4-stroke alkylat gazoline. The kind you use for small engines that are stored for a long time or if you just want to spare the environment some. I guess i could try some white gas (which in sweden is called lacknafta and usually used as thinner) It was actually quite a beautiful calm and steady candle flame.
@swedmiro Lacknafta in Sweden is not like White Spirit elsewhere. It is more or less kerosene. You can not vaporize this fuel in the burner due to the wick. If you try, it will take some time to clean the wick before the wrong fuel is gone from the wick and your stove is working again. Alkylat Gasoline (Aspen or any other make) is more or less identical with Industrial Gasoline (chemical clean gasoline) that work very well in gasoline stoves. Coleman fuel is not necessary. Michael
@cmb56 hmm....that could be the problem. The last owner might have tried kerosene. Ill just fire it up again and let it burn until i get some alkylat up in the burner. too bad lacknafta wont work. I like the price point.
@swedmiro Alkylat gasoline at Biltema is 139 SEK/5 liter and Lacknafta is 100 SEK/5 liter. Not to much difference. Michael
Just did some googling and saw that the flame point for Lacknafta is on par with Kerosene and 110C higher than the flame point for Alkylat. -50c is one hell of a low flame point "edit" i know that the flame point actually is not the temperature where it lights up
No, white gas is actually the same as clean petrol in Sweden, e.g. heptane or Coleman fuel. You are probably thinking about White spirit, which is the same as lacknafta here.
@swedmiro A little trick is to use a pumpcap and a mini/midi pump – if you have – to get a bit more pressure in the tank. Last year I got a 46 with some questionable fuel in it. Drained, filled with Biltema 4-stroke, pumped and let it squirt out a bit of fuel, dried and fired. A bit hard to start but got it running and puffing and soon settled at a nice bit pulsing roar. @tofta I don't have a pump cap. I was thinking of burning the old stuff off and let the new stuff just creep up the wick and after a while it would completely replace the old stuff. Or i could buy a mopp and rewick it
I agree with m'boy. The candle flame suggests low pressure. Do you have another stove you can swap caps with? Does the control spindle seem to turn the right amount? There is a small chance that the cleaning needle is not set properly. Residual kerosene (or equivalent) probably will not have much effect once it is diluted with proper fuel. If you chill the stove in the freezer, tighten the cap and then let the stove warm in the sun with the valve open you should be able to force several mL of fuel through the wick and jet without running the stove.
Warm in the sun? "looks out on the winterly landscape with 2 feet of snow" I have a cab heater i can use to warm the thing up i guess Yeah, everything seems ok but obviously isn't. I was hoping for a runner out of the mail but ill will have to go through it.
Very easy to determine what is wrong if a pressure leak. Quickest is equalizing pressure, tighten cap and place in hot water. Even better, place entire tank and burner in a freezer for 30 minutes then dunk in hot water, watching where bubbles if any appear from. Nipple can be blocked if no leaks found. Worse case, wick is in bad shape and needs replacing. Duane
