Hi everyone, Decided to fire up my 111T, I am the first owner, it has never been used before. I changed the fuel cap washer and the pump leather. It has awesome pressure, no leaks whatsoever. Using Kerosene for fuel - preheated with denatured alcohol, waited to light it after fire was out...and huge ball of fire. tried again and same result - could it be the wrong jet? Perhaps it has the jet suitable for alc.? I took the jet out, no markings. I used a jet from repair kit from Optimus Hiker Plus, it has a much smaller orifice , same results. I am familiar with this type of stove as far as operating them goes. Could it be the wrong jet? This 111T has a silver cap, and a wire that holds the cap in the burner. I will send pictures later when I get a chance. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
If you're the first owner and it's never been used before it's unlikely the alcohol jet would be in. If it starts with a huge ball of fire then there's too much fuel vapor there. Try pumping ten times then preheating. Block the stove from any wind so the preheat stays on the burner. When the preheat flame is out just crack the valve open a little with your lighter already lit at the outer cap.
Thanks Ray, that is what I thought too, doubt that came with an alcohol jet. Preheating was done using the shield and away from wind. Will try with fewer pumps. Just for comparison, here is an Optimus 182 which uses identical burners and used 5 minutes apart from the 111T.
Nice looking Optimus you have there. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to the new 111T. It's hard to say without any pics. All of us have probably had a flare up at some point. I'll give my nonregulated silent burners about 3 pumps then light them up. If I do that on my Primus 5 it'll flare up. It works so good one pump is all it needs to get enough vapor up top to light. With regulated burners I pump before the prime. I got in the habit of doing that with the white gas stoves such as the 111B and enders. I figure if the nrv fails it will happen while you're pumping and it's best to spot the problem before the stove is lit.
it was the jet, and now the cap.... Original cap causes underburn. I use a similar rusty old cap from an older 111T and works fine. VERY frustrating. My only pet peeve with the silent burners. I know others modify the caps to avoid underburn, i am just not there yet. Experimenting with one, but results so far are no good. Anyway, problem identified. Off to finding another burner cap...grrrr. Thanks again Ray and take care! Aaron
