McCaul Stove: is this a date?

I'm fettling this McCaul stove and I'm wondering whether this is a date stamp, and what the "M" means:




Any help much appreciated.

I'm guessing it's like THIS one in the Stove Reference Gallery, which cries out 1950's era to me, so your stove would be 1954, but the "M"? Don't know.

A Monitor (military issue in this case) of a similar date and lettering format.

Funny that two have appeared in the Antipodes, and not so May from "the old country".
