since I had the Kero I thought I would give the 17 another go. I primed the cup with some meths and tightned the air screw and a couple of pumps and it was off. I am very pleased with its performance. It boiled a pot of water in a reasonable time. I have not looked @ the bottom of my pot yet to see what kind of mess the kero left. It looked like it burned clean very blue with just a tiny tiny bit of yellow @ the tips. I am sorry that did not try Kero sooner. As a male with typical male traits (change issues) I will never question it again.
Hi SB There is no reason why the base of your pans should be soiled to any great extent if the fuel is combusting correctly. That 17 is looking good, any chance of a few more pictures of the tank etc. ? Cheers
Hello splitbus If your kero is burning correctly, the bottom of your pans will be clean , not messed up.
Just beginning to understand. All this CCS stuff Yanks don't understand Kero cos' you have to ....preheat. Pomms want to know why burn petrol for less btus Here in Oz we don't care much as long as it works!! Kero mostly as it don't want to blow up yu' jerry cans in summer!!

I did check the bottom of the pan this moring and clean as a whistle!!. I had heard stories that kero was sooty and smelly. I am very pleased with it and am going to search out more Kero stoves. I have wondered if you could make a lantern stove using existing parts of other lanterns?? If anyone has any experience with that let me know I have a pretty ok Radius 100 tank. I will post some more pics of my 17 when I get home this evening.
OK this how it looks cant put handle need to put side holes in for handle yep this are enders burner a 71 & 8r i hand to rap some fiberglass wick for a longer prime the 71 works better the 8r takes a little longer to get up and going but i love them
Hi guys Intressting answers about my picture! The fun thing about stove/lanterns is that it does exists alot of types, check this: First this: Called Radius No 143 - A lantern on a normal 21 stove And the Radius No 145: A lantern on a 17 stove And the last one: Radius No 146, same as Radius No 143 BUT the glass is a "globe" that's why it is called No 146 and not 143. To be honest I can show you guys hooow many lantern pictures but I'll not do that to be a little bit fair But if someone'd like to see some Swedish table lamp I'd be happy to show it! So just ask. I havn't tested the lantern with the Radius No 17 tank but I'll do that when I get some time over and I'll post a picture on it. Regards Magnus
Hello, Splitbus, I'm glad to find that your 17 works well on kero (paraffin). I have been stuck on coleman fuel for much of my stove use when camping. After a time though I started using an occasional kero burner (Opt 48 my favorite with silent burner) on some of our trips and they wrok very well with no soot problems. I could not believe that we could simmer a spahgetti sauce in the middle of nowhere with one of them and not burn food on the inside bottom of the pot. I'll bet your 17 will simmer down too if you watch to make sure you don't get a flame out running at low pressure. Magnus's lantern units are just beautiful. I've only seen them in the older catalog copies. . I understand roughly how they work, I can see the tube going up to the head for a mantle, and the mantle mount ring, but I am curious how it goes for you on start up to prime one with spirits to warm up the vaporization tube before pumping up the tank, to get fuel running up through. I assume the nipple is up top, maybe facing down into the mantle??? With a spirit burn for warm up, does the mantle hold up ok regarding staying clean and maintaining it's shape ? Thanks, Doug
Hi Doug! Hope you understand the function by this picture: It works just like a normal Primus table lamp! Regards Magnus
How about this?? A coleman 226 with a 242 valve using a 242 gererator w/ kero nipple. I just have to come up with a adapter to the tank. Its a bit of a frankenstein but I think that with a little spit and polish I could pull it off.
MAGNUS.. i'm with Nick on this..wonderful stuff..never knew such things were made.. could you take one apart so we could see all the bits and how they fit together on the stove to make a lamp??
First of all: Cool lantern splitbus! Very nice!! Since I don't have the Radius lamps here at home I can't take a photo of all parts but I found one picture on my computer but it's not mine! Regards Magnus
Hi Magnus, Yes I think I see the workings now. I have one table lamp here (gift for wife for Christmas) and it is a Coleman 139 table lamp. It's similar enough for me to see the details. The valve is below the vapo tube, must be a nipple at the top and venturi action pulls air in thru the air tube into a mix area before it goes around the bend to the mantle. I snapped a pic just now of this model here. Your's are really nice looking. Thanks, Doug
That is a nice 139 I gave one just like it to my Mom for xmas. Here are the pics of the Rad 17 that I was burning last night. I got some new polish it is a cloth type and works really nice I will post some before and after of the Rad 100 when I get the light attached to it and burning.
Hi guys, Thanks splitbus. Quite a coincidence on the 139 lamps as Christmas gifts. Pics did not come through for me in your last post of the 17. I would be most interested in your Rad 100 photos too, including the lamp portion. I received a Rad 100 about 3 months ago, it's in great shape but was missing a burner head and flame plate. It had a silent cap so I'm working on matching another head to it. They are a nice looking stove and seem quite rare. If you decide to set up a buffing wheel, let me know, I could make an adapter for you to attach a buff to a motor if you can find a low speed motor of 1/3 HP or so. I can sedn a pic of mine if you like. There is also a good bit of information here on using citric acid powder in water for first round cleaning of parts and stove tanks. A favorite is one posted by kerophile using a little wallpaper paste powder in a ciric acid solution so that you can goop a tank up and just let it sit on the stove for an hour or two breaking down the oxidation. Dunking a whole tank is not so good, so the paste idea is a handy alternative. This makes later polishing by whatever means much easier. Good luck in getting the stove back to life. Regards, Doug
