Does anybody need a good laugh check his nice picture that has a good burner flame i think he got s--- for brains http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220068999201&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1
With very little time available for a few more months anyway has pried me away from this site and other things I enjoy. Is rather amusing to see that poor 8r being described thusly, but I must protest the insinuations and character assassination of the seller. Obviously he has not a clue how an 8r is supposed to run, and what a great stove it truly can be. I sincerely hope my doctor doesn't look upon me because I cannot explain the causes of and cures for something like Ameobic dysentary even though I have some grasp of what it does to someone. It does work great...... with the flame spreader installed! I laugh at my own foibles and take no exception to someone else doing the same to himself or me: Without exception, there is no person on the planet who knows everything, my only hope is the seller truly is ignorant and not intentionally being deceptive. Must run stovies, but to the despair of some I must return again... 8)
New Camper How do you know that the stove in question works great with the flame spreader installed? He has tried to deceive by lighting a little dribble of fuel from the jet and then trying to portray it as working great. His lack of knowledge about stoves is obvious, but so is his attempted deceit. With the stove lit like that and the fuel valve open, within a few seconds of that photo, there would be a fireball.
I tend to cut folks a bit more slack. This seller might have in hand his very first 8R, so thinks it's normal. If so, he's not lieing, he's misinformed. A lie requires actual knowlege of the truth and intent to decieve. As far as I can see from his ad he simply doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Being clueless is not always a character flaw, but can be annoying. I sent him an eBay message letting him know what he has, what it burns, and what's missing. We'll see how he responds. Then we can flay him alive and roll him in salt. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH ! ! ! Easy goin' ol' Gerry
OK, I sent him a message asking how long the stove took to boil a kettle of water. He replied, "David I'm not sure Ive never put a timer to it. Thanks" Now, if I'm being charitable, in my book that's nothing other than being totally evasive He's obviously never tried it and his assertion that it "works well" is pure bullsh*t... So I've messaged him back - "Hi, Well would you put a timer on it for me please? Otherwise just give me a rough idea, if you don't mind. One minute?, five? 15? Half an hour? One hour? Surely you've some idea how long it took - you say it 'works well' Thanks, David..." Don't suppose he'll reply...
Trevor: I do agree with Gerry about giving people the benefit of the doubt, but now that I think about your point about the fireball, it might seem he is being deceptive so I am presuming he is a total ignoramous. Optimus 8r are so well built that there is practically nothing that can go wrong, but again given the sellers ignorance might suggest he may have done some things in what he thought was fettling. As I said before; I hope he is simply ignorant and not being deceptive. Was not trying to start another debate(I somehow manage that easily... odd... ), only extend him the benefit of the doubt until clearly guilty.
I sent a qestion to him and asked him if it is missing any parts that he knows of and how long it takes to boil a cup of water. Then I will put him on the spot about the flame spreader.
Well, he did reply:- "You can go to Optimus website to get that technical information. The amount of time it takes to boil water depends on the amount you are heating and the altitude you are at." Now what do you make of that? Should I still give him the benefit of the doubt?
I would think it prudent to assume this gentleman has never used this stove for more than trying to light up his driveway. That said and considering that i have mad a JackA$$ of my self in another thread here, i'm perfectly willing to allow that he doesn't have a clue as to the stove or the auction. I don't need another 8r, but hey, if i can get this one cheap because someone else "knows better" then come the end of the auction i'm going to jump on it, and bless the others who allowed me to get a cheap stove. lance
Well, after his evasive responses earlier, I messaged him again:- "Hi Larry. I'm not buying a stove from Optimus, I'm thinking about buying yours. So how long will it take to boil 1 pint of water at whatever height you are above sea-level in Arkansas? I can do the calculation to convert the boiling time to where I live. Thanks, David." This is what came back:- "David It took almost 4 minutes to boil a pint of water Thanks Larry" OK, so an Optimus 8R with no flame spreader could boil a pint of water in 4 minutes. I've gotta say I'm impressed...
Hey david, this was discussed somewhere here, but by placing a pot above the bell of the burner, it acts (somewhat) like a flame spreader... not very effecient but workable?
Wouldn't know, Steve - I haven't tried it. But surely not with that puny flame he's showing in the listing... I can tell you, however, that a silent burner doesn't work without the burner caps - I just got a foot-high spray of burning kero from the jet. I have to say I was then very busy trying to stop my kitchen cupboards catching alight and I didn't have the foresight to experiment with using a pan as a substitute flame spreader. #-o So we may never know...
I got an answer. Quote: "Thanks." I think the fool knows nothing about the stove and couldn't possibly care less as long as someone buys it. At least he changed his blurb and no longer claims it will burn kerosene. He's now been informed by several people and can no longer claim ignorance, from here on out it's all lies. I know something much worse than flaying alive and rolling in salt, I've had time to think up something really viciously cruel and unpleasant. We'll strap him in the comfy chair and force him to listen to scratchy Barry Manilow records until his auction ends. To intensify the agony we will allow him only room temperature root beer and stale raised doughnuts to eat. Despicably cruel ol' Gerry
