Kidde Recalls Fire Extinguishers with Plastic Handles Due to Failure to Discharge and Nozzle Detachment: One Death Reported https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/k...astic-handles-due-to-failure-to-discharge-and I have one of these. I tried online and could not complete the process, so i called, waited a few minutes, and had a nice lady take my information, and said a replacement is on its way. Ken
Did mine online and a replacement is 25 days out. No idea what their instructions are going to be for the old one though
I had one of those in the 4wd several years ago. One day I noticed the carpet in front of it was all white. It definitely did discharge just not at a time conveniant to me
Thanks for the uptick on these. I checked mine and three are in recall. Will contact Kidde today. Tom
I have one on the US recall list but I live in Canada. Yesterday I called to ask which Kidde website do I claim on. Left my name and number. No callback received yet.

Thank you for the notice, snwcmpr. I have two of the recalled Kidde extinguishers. When I checked my extinguishers I noticed that the similar First Alert model has a metal nozzle and handle whereas the recalled Kidde devices are plastic. Hummm...maybe I should have been paying attention to such details.
Had two extinguishers affected by the recall, and Kidde has replacements heading my way. I had planned on buying more extinguishers anyway and it's hard to have too many around, so I went and bought new ones tonight. The new ones are also Kidde brand, and they now have metal handles and valves. Thanks again for posting this Snwcmpr. I'm not on social media and don't own a TV or watch the news, it probably would have been a long while until I learned of the recall otherwise.
@snwcmpr Thanks, Ken, I applied to have my two home extinguishers replaced. Next time I get to the boat there are three more there.
Got one of my replacement extinguishers in today. Came with a return label, instructions to return the old extinguisher in the same packaging, and how to setup a Fedex pickup. I'll ignore that last part and just take it to work, it can go out with the rest of our Fedex packages.
After posting here previously I received a call back and my info was taken. No mention was made that I was to return the old unit so I took it to the local municipal disposal depot and it was accepted as a pressure vessel and put with propane tanks and other fire extinguishers. Purolator delivered the replacement yesterday. I have others not on the recall list and due for a refill but requiring a pressure test if I want refilled. Test cost more than new one so 3 more going to the dump.
When I processed my return online, I was told that instructions on what to do with the faulty fire extinguishers would be included with the replacements when they arrived.
If they'd said something when speaking on the phone about returning the NFG one I would have waited and given the local Purolator guy some business. Small town and he's not very busy. It went to recycling with 3 others that were out of date. New one did include returning instructions and prepaid weighbill but by then a month too late.
Oh well. I doubt the fire extinguisher gestapo is going to come to your door and demand payment for the new fire extinguisher. This isn't the IRS, who will spend $20k to collect $0.42 in unpaid taxes. Wonder what Kidde is doing with the old ones? At $15 for replacement brand new retail pricing, I doubt it makes sense for them to recertify the cylinder, replace with updated valve, and resell them. You probably saved them some trouble by recycling it yourself.
They probably just want as many of the old ones back as possible to limit their liability. If somebody at the recyclers used or sold one of the defective ones and someone was injured, it could be difficult to prove it was one they had already "replaced". ....Arch
