Hello everyone I am new to the site and stove restoration. I have been lurking for a couple weeks and have gleaned many valuable tips on my newest hobby...so thank you all! I have managed to buy not one, but two Coleman 426D's in the last week. at first I though about using one (with rougher paint) as parts donor stove but after running both stoves today, I've decided to repaint both stoves and perhaps just keep them both running. The first stove is the early 426D with the straight grates (April 1965) and the second is from '73 with the grates that have the circles around the burners. I'm pretty excited! Please feel free to share your favorite color matches and methods for painting the cases and tanks. So far I have a possible tank color from the internet, Duplicolor red engine enamel DE1653. Thanks for any and all help with the ideas! Barry
Welcome, Barry! Never knew there is a Dallas in Oregon. Rustoleum Hunter Green Gloss Enamel is a good match for newer dark green lanterns and stoves. It may be just a shade too dark for your stoves, though. I'm sure a US based member could recommend a closer match. Those stoves are excellent workhorses.
Barry, Check the Coleman Collector's Forum and use the search feature. there are several threads and lists of various rattle can paint colors. For tanks I use Rustoleum Sunrise Red. There were several shades of green they used though so you'll need to do a little hunting through the threads.
Thanks for the tip on newer stoves! I may have to touch up my 424 at some point. Dallas is the county seat of Polk county, Oregon. Dallas was named after Vice President Stephen Dallas who served in President Polk's administration.
Thanks for the tip on the Coleman collector's forum, scanning the treads but a lot of them are a few years old and I'm hoping for folks that might have paint choices that don't run into availability issues or things like that. Thanks again!
Thanks for the heads up on the Sunrise red, sprayed the first paint coats on my tank this afternoon. If it isn't the correct color for a 1965 tank, it still looks great to me. Can't wait to get it back together now! Thanks again!
