Coleman 445 ("Pioneer", 1958, Australian Made)

Here is my NIB Coleman 445 Pioneer, made in 1958 (with many thanks to Bernie Holmes).

This is a kerosene stove, fitted with Svea burners.























"Special Swedish Heat Resisting Steel/Svea Made in Sweden/No 839/S"

These accessories were in the stove.





The box:

Note the wording; "A Coleman-Thomas Product/Distributed by C.J. Thomas & Son Pty. Ltd."


Note the "58" at the bottom of the printing. The newspaper that wrapped the side windscreens was dated 7 July 1958.

I have a copy of large Coleman-Thomas catalogue form the 1950s. This stove is not listed in in. The catalogue lists the Coleman 336 "Chef" and the Coleman 337 "Super Chef" as kerosene two-burners. (I have an Australian made Coleman 336 "Chef" here). The Coleman 445 is not listed in this Coleman-Thomas catalogue, either.


Before you ask, this stove will remain unlit.

I will put some beeswax on the small areas of rust.

WOW!!!! THAT is one of the finest presentations, I've seen here at CCS, with all bases covered perfectly!!! Wonderful and rare stove? Check! Unfired, with plans to keep it that way? Check! Came with original box, in excellent condition, WITH date on box, and newspaper provenance? Check! Lovely and perfect photos of this marvelous kero/Coleman masterpiece? Check!! And, finally, now owned by one of our fine members of CCS, and shared here, so the rest of us can Ooooooh, and Ahhhhh, and drool all over our keyboards???? Check! Check! And Double Check!!!!
Tony, I'm exceedingly happy that you are now the caretaker of this lovely example of a stove!!! As our Jewish friends would say, "I'm Kvelling for you"!!! Awestruck.....

We Yanks would never have dreamed (at least I didn't) that out there, of original manufacture, there were Coleman suitcases with classic brass kerosene burners.

 

I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found my used Pioneer. Yours is an absolute miracle! I'm glad you've posted photos of the stickers. I ruined those on mine. Beautiful!

That's an amazing find! So unique how the combined the Coleman fuel tank and the burners and controls.

Someone else around here had a similar idea to you, so I made these measurements and sent them this:

“The[se] are inside measurements in mm.

Box is 423x280x113;

Teardrop is offset from edge by 10mm. Where it will sit on your stove depends on the burner/ fuel lines to the burner; but on mine the shortest distance from the side of the box to the edge of the smallest part of the cutout is 100mm.”
