Svea 123 R from 1974

I have a Svea 123 R from 1974 (says Made in Sweden) on it.

I have not used it in about 20 years...

Now I would like to take it with me camping with my kid.

Assuming I test it in the backyard and all is well, is there any reason that I should not go on using this stove?

I had thought about switching to one of those little wood stoves, like the Solo.

We will be doing car camping soon this year, and some actual, limited backpacking later this summer.

No. Go out and use it.
But be sure the seals are OK, so there are no leakage, but that is of course part of the testing…

 

The filler cap gasket is the one item that most likely needs changing. They can be very hard. The SRV (Safety Release Valve) in the cap is also likely to be hard.
A dunk test is a great start. Cool the stove off after opening/closing the cap and valve. In a freezer or refrigerator. Then dunk the stove into a bucket/sink of warm/hot water. As the stove warms up pressure will build in the tank and any leaks will be evident by bubbles.
After that you can report back what you find.

Fettlebox has the parts that you will need.
Someone near you may have a tool that is necessary for replacing the SRV pip.

Parts of Oregon may be like Kalifornia, dry, hot so may be a limited span where a woodstove could legally and safely be used in the back country. Enjoy your 123R.

The Svea 123 is an excellent small camping stove. If you get it set up properly (check/change the seals, etc), I think you’ll find it much more useful (and clean) than a wood stove.

Use the real item when replacing the safety valve washer. I used a rubber washer that seemed the same size and destroyed a 123R stove in a bursting fireball in 1992. A hard lesson to learn.

I bought another 123R though and treated it better. Actually I have several...

 

After planning to test the svea (and probably going through some sort of refurbishment process) for months now, and not actually doing it, I realize now that I do not have the time to go through this.
If I am interested in selling this old svea 123, would I post such information on another forum on this site?

We welcome all comers but I too support sustainable site / membership, no doubt about that. I am in agreement with the above.

Are you sure you want to sell it? bummer I think, just me. You might inquire re having someone service your filler cap or whole stove?

We also have "valuation" category available, with open access to all. I can say with certainty on occasion, deals are done with a post in valuations that opened the door.

I post, equal importance for myself, this is re a "1974" 123R.
If you do post in valuations, please posts images of stove. AND comment as to how / why there is confidence in your 1974 dating. I'll say too upfront there may be interest in close up of your filler cap.
Pics are also pretty much required if you want suggestions re price range anyway. I look forward to another post if you're up for it.

Your ad, as is, is totally fine (it may be sold as I type this). FWIW you are selling an Optimus No.88. The No.88 was first offered in 73, seen here.

Actually you offer a No.88 with mini pump. The no.2911 mini pump was not available in '74 as far as I know. So pump was added later....
or maybe you bought it new all at same time... sorry ... but if so that may be a twist. It's no biggy anyway (it's good kit, you're here to sell it ). The earliest I see the mini pump is in 78 here (and it was not offered in 75).

I was interested to see a pic of another example of "1974" filler cap (as mentioned above) but mini pump also means i'll not see that, your cap is one that works with your mini pump. That's all good!

PS under TMI: you have what is referred to in '73 as a No. 88, the early version that only came with 1 sauce pan.
Some time later the 88 was offered with lil stamp "NEW now with 2 sauce pans.
Along with that, '78 price list refers to a No. 88N... coincidence? maybe.

tag @shagratork , for being quite familiar w/the mini pumps. May note the 88N as well?

 

I have no concrete evidence, just memories of first seeing a minipump for sale. Given where I lived at the time, that would be '75 or '76.
