It is a miners safety lamp. It used underground to test for dangerous gases or lack of oxygen.

    it's not !

    I'm an ex miner

if it was a miners lamp it would have:
1.double layer of mesh to be explosion proof
    2.Small flame
    3.Sealed with seals.
4.No means of taking it apart or re-lighting it underground.
    5. A lot more substantially made.

    all the best.mark

Have to agree even though not a miner. That lamp was not designed to produce light. It would be useless in a mine

Just adding Governor and J.S.& S were trade names - makers of blow torches.
After the 1920s miners lamps (cap lamps)were battery operated ..and the flame lamps were then for testing for methane "firedamp" only.

Yes it's sump heater. Lucas and Desmo made very similar versions.

    @Mark Jones

I should correct myself - it's a radiator heater. Sump heaters were more squat. These heaters were hung in the engine compartment to stop the radiator freezing in the days before anti-freeze.

I wonder how bad the carbon monoxide output is. As small as it is, and set up for hanging from an overhead hook, I could see that being an awesome accessory for my little boat during the cooler months. It certainly is a pretty thing.

It's a small candle-sized flame designed to keep a very small space above 0c/32f. I doubt that it would have much warming effect on a boat.

@Trojandog, Thank you and --oh well. The two Uco candle lanterns I already have will probably be just as effective.

I stand corrected. I assumed that the cover had the flame proof screens. Thanks for the info. I’ve never seen or heard of these heaters.

Mark, I would have to agree that your lamp is a car radiator heater. I have one too, it was given to me by my grandfather when I was 13 years old, he would give me something each time I visited . It was placed on a hook in the engine bay. This one was used in camping trips as frost was a real danger. He didn’t like using metho as it boiled off and lowered the boiling point of the water in the radiator. Where he lived there was no chance of a frost, in any case the car was hept in a garage. Here are some pics of mine and one of the car it went in. The pic is of a 1924 Essex with my father and his dog in it. It had a camping body, which he and Nan slept in wile the cooking was done outside a tent “lean too auto tent” went on to the car. By the way I have this tent and it is still serviceable.
    Cheers
    Rob
