Any Idea of the history of this stove?? I dated it But found no Info on it . I don't know if this is the Original burner. Did this come with a Silent burner?? If anyone has one or knows anything about this primus 221 please Give me some feedback Thanks ECHO1
Hi @ECHO1 The CCS site is a wonderful source of knowledge. Here is a starting point of you wish to research Primus 221 stoves: https://classiccampstoves.com/forums/primus-no-221.323/ The Primus No. 221 was factory fitted with a roarer burner. The silent burner on your stove could have been later fitted with a silent burner by the distributor, to fulfil a particular order, or by a later owner. The legs on your stove are also not original, as evidenced by their shape. This is what they should look like: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/primus-no-221l-1932.9732/ I should say that your stove has been well restored and is looking good. Best Regards, Kerophile.
The legs do look like they match a 1938 from the Link that you sent and the pics of a 1938 I do appreciate the help. I have no idea of the value?? I think it will go up on auction Or should I keep it ??. Any Ides of It's value?? ECHO1
Hi I never express an opinion on the monetary value of a stove, so I am never wrong. I believe there is a valuation section on CCS where one can post such queries. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Thanks I will have a look After looking at the Thread of them I think it will be a Keeper and I will look for a Roarer burner to bring it back to original configuration Much appreciated ! ECHO1
Hi @ECHO1 Do you really think those are Primus style legs? I can see no resemblence between the legs shown on your stove, and those shown on any stove in the Primus No.221 reference gallery. Best Regards, Kerophile.
I don't know enough. I am just looking at the pics of the legs. I will go by what you think as I am a newbie on stoves but I am really enjoying them !!! and You Guys have been so helpful ECHO1
A priming cup’s needed too. Looks like a silent burner, taller than the original roarer type, required non-specification (longer) pot legs to provide the necessary clearance between the dome top of the burner outer cap and the base of a pot.
Hi @ECHO1 AND @Mark Layman , the shape of the bend at the top of stove legs can differ between different Stove manufacturer and can be a distinctive as a fingerprint: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/stove-leg-identification.10479/#post-100766 From the above post you will see that Primus legs had a fairly tight bend at the top end (small angle),wheras Optimus bends were much wider, subtending a much wider angle. The legs fitted to ECHO1’s Primus 221 have the wide bend at the top end, totally different from a Primus produced stove leg and more like a bend used by Optimus and some British stove makers. Another difference relates to the bottom end of the stove legs of collapsible stove models. The vast majority of manufactures used a double “kink” bend and reduced section where the leg is retained. This double kink feature is very difficult to produce without a heavy press and suitable die, so home-made legs and cut-down legs are usually left straight where they enter the foot socket. The bottom end of the legs on ECHO1’s No.221 stove appear to be straight right down to the socket, and have no double kink. If I was a betting man, i would say that these legs were adapted from British army suplus stove legs, which were modified to fit this Primus No. 221 stove. I rest my case. Best Regards, Kerophile.
@Mark Layman & @ECHO1 Just to make sure there is no confusion about terminology with this stove: “Legs” are the things that fit on the sides of the stove and rise up above the burner and a pot sits on them. “Feet” is the name given to those folding bits that the stove sits on. Cheers Tony
Hi, I provide some photos and measuments of Pr.221 stove legs from this thread here: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/primus-no-221l-1932.9732/
I think I have the spirit cup that came with this. So the only thing that is original to this stove is the tank??? Wow !! I am at a loss as what to do. If I can get it to work after Gary A dose his thing with the burner then I will just use it as a Daily stove. As long as it works good and Puts out good heat then it will be my Camping stove !! & I cook a lot outdoors in the yard... This way I won't feel bad if it gets banged -Up !! What a shame. Well I have learned a lot from all of you !! Man am I glad I came back !!! ECHO1
There is a Korean guy that sells legs that look like that with the ridges on top. Anybody ever look at them or buy them?? ECHO1
Hi @ECHO1 , The legs you have on the stove look perfectly serviceable, so there is no need to buy any replacements IMO. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Question, does the silent burner produce a lot more heat in the riser than the roarer burner?? I ask because iv just fitted this exact same silent burner to my 221 , iv run this stove quite a lot before on its original roarer and while the riser does get hot , it's never got this hot! i ended up putting a wet cloth around the riser tube, im thinking this burner was probably intended for something like a No5s ?
