Although it seems to me somewhat egocentric to wish myself happy birthday, it seems on the other hand, rather selfish not to. I enter my last year of my sixth decade today not unhappy that I am getting old and broke down, although I do feel many aches and pains, but happy that I made it this far, relatively unscathed. After all I am still walking, talking and earning a living. I have known many people, who through no fault of their own, have not made it this far ranging from Army buddies to friends and co-workers. It was be selfish of me to not be happy when so many people would gladly trade places. So rather then complain about what could be different, instead. I will celebrate today surrounded by a loving wife, children and grandchildren as well as various other friends and family. And we will do so in the universal celebration of sharing a grand meal which will include Santa Maria pinquito beans. Those of you from the Central Coast of California have heard of Santa Maria but I doubt of it being an international household name. It is another farm town just inland of the Centeal California Coast where they grow a variety of red bean known as Pinquitos. Although my Spanish is fairly limited, I believe it means “small” or “tiny”. It is about half the size of a pinto bean and has a nutty flavor. Traditionally served cooked with a BBQ seasoning, you can mix your own spices or buy these great seasoning packs that are usually in the stores with the beans. As everything goes better with cow and pig, I am given the task of cooking bacon and hamburger to add to the pot. Of course I choose my Optimus 96 which is my fall back camping stove and did so outside to my dear wife’s delight as it keeps the odors down in the house. These beans are usally served as a side dish with BBQ’d Tri Tip steak which we will do. For desert, my wife has whipped up a home made German chocolate cake. Good times
Thank you Wim. Of course I posted this thread before noticing that it should have been an Optimus 00 not 96. Obviously due to my advanced age.
Happy birthday, and thanks for presenting a regional California dish! I'll have to source the Pinquitos. ....Arch
That is the company I use. As I said, a bit pricey for beans but worth it I think. In the store, I have never found them outside that area. The claim is they are exclusive to Santa Maria. Ours came out great of course and we made a lot so there is quite a bit for leftovers. One of those foods that taste even better after a day or so. I also got some wonderful presents of small batch whiskey and a good single malt. Good brain food when solving the world’s problems. At least you think you sound so intelligent!
