    Right, I'm off to the central heating fuel fuel tank to syphon off some more untreated kero and pour it over the used calcium carbonate. Wish me luck!

    good luck - you may be on to something
    have you considered just adding quicklime, calcium oxide, nasty stuff but you might have the same result with less fuss

    it occurred to me that if there is calcium oxide present it would not be consumed by the flame but deposited in the surrounding area as a fine particulate

    Colin my sincere thanks for giving this a go and proving I’m not bonkers - Sir Goldsworthy Gurney was born in my native home.
    This thread has been absolutely fantastic to read - superb!
    I love tinkering and inventing - I blame my father and grandfather mostly, these stoves have sparked many interests for me and enabled many processes to be cost effective and convenient.
    The Primus No. 85 was always going to be a challenge - now it’s a fine asset in much of what I do
