That’s pretty cool Lannigdu! Just been considering new fuel bottles of more substance and style. I’ve an engraver and etching system here - if you’d actually like it etched ‘NERVE GAS’ :-) ?
Although not primarily a spirit can for priming, I use this with my Trangia. The 20 oz Coke bottle holds enough for a week's use while camping. After the stove cools, you can suck out the remaining alcohol back into the bottle. At home I use this to prime nearly everything since the little spout places the alcohol right where you want it. It's not very classy, but it works oh so well. Brad
I have some of the smart water bottles that I use for water. The ones I have, which I think are 1 L, are too big for me to use with alcohol. I must say the lifespan of the coke bottle has been impressive; I think I have been using this one for 3 or 4 years. Don’t ask me why I haven’t replaced it, must be the high cost?
I have to admit I do like the idea of syphoning out unused fuel. I probably waste as much in evaporation as I burn making coffee on the Turm. A simple job when I can find a few minutes spare.
A quick look on fleabay and I’ve found a rather nice paraffin/kero container at a reasonable size and price :-)
I bought this little 1oz flask to use as a spirit can. Came with a funnel: Next to my Primus can: And finally with my current use can:
This is my most recent find. A 3 or 4 oz flask on one side and a dry compartment on the other side for matches etc. Ivan
Pretty cool @IvanN , never seen that before. I have a flask that the other half is a cigar holder, but never seen one of those.
Forum; ...what a great thread, showing the fine art of repurposing at its best...I love some of the creative options!...not to be MR. OSHA here (I certainly am NOT), and spoil everybody's fun, but my only caution is to label containers which would normally be filled with consumables, so that any other parties might get the wrong idea (or me in a moment of weakness or decreased awareness)... When I need to take along quantities beyond what is in the stove reservoir, I just the just use the plastic Trangia valve bottles (totally mundane and not so creative, sorry!)...they are quite robust, simple to use, and the valve allows precision decanting. Recently, after watching some amazing and impressive fire generating techniques on the "David West" Channel on YT (including igniting a few remaining drops of some sort of booze from a discarded "nip" bottle...really amazing, the different techniques he uses to make fire...probably should be recommended viewing for stovies in case you forget, or loose, your Bic!), I also got an idea for repurposing, and did a materials compatibility test on one of these little (resealable!) plastic bottles for acetone (a very handy and effective solvent, but which I don't have in my general tools because I don't wish to, or think of, carrying a large container of it)...figuring the plastic was suitable for consumable alcohol (a complex CH molecule...sorry chemists!...I'm an electronics guy!), I figured it would be OK for acetone, (very basically put, also a complex CH molecule...sorry again!)...and indeed the acetone (which can aggressively attack many plastics!) didn't seem to make any impression whatsoever on the plastic after a week...now I can have a small quantity of acetone alone at all times! I DID remove the original nip label and relabeled it appropriately... Warrior; Cigar/flask...two essentials covered...I like it...! Cheers
As you can see in my last photo, the can on the right is my current use can. I purchased a bunch of them from China for a song. Then I bought the skull and cross bone labels from Amazon. I'll put one of those on the flask as well.
Warrior; I got it wrong...Ivan was the one who posted the cigar/fuel flask... Just as a point of information, I'd be careful about using that Chinese container for fuel...they cheapen everything to the point just barely this side of failure. Cheers
Would think you could not go wrong with a Trangia fuel bottle with the leak proof spout. They come in several sizes. Mine need a funnel, Coleman, Sigg and Mil Kill. Orange flower is a California Poppy. Daryl sunny SoCal
