G'day all, I came across this trivet in me shed and I can't recall where I got it from let alone what stove it may have come with. I don't think it is home made but I did wonder if it came off a propane stove rather than a GPA stove. I'd appreciate any and all help in educating me as to what this trivet belongs to.
It’s a great idea. I think it’s home made though. It stops it falling apart and comes off so it’s a good thing. Use it on a stove that has removable legs and you are set. Cheers Rob
If it is home made, it is by someone who has access to the right tools. Are the legs tapered or is it the photo perspective?
Marty, That's correct, if it is home made he had lot of needed machinery at home. I suppose he may have worked at a foundry and done it in his spare time. The welding is expert. The bottom of the legs aren't tapered but they have had the slightest of the milling so the legs fit snuggle into leg holders. I tried a couple of stoves I had laying around, a Primus 221 and a Coleman Solus and the trivet fit both perfectly. The trivet has gone from something I was going to throw out to keeping. The shadow shows the milling best though it exaggerates the depth of the milling.
Most certainly home made in my opinion. It's pretty crude. You don't need many tools to make a thing like this.
Thanks for your opinion Christer. I think if it wasn't home made the only other explanation would be that an aftermarket company manufactured and sold these. Perhaps it is my total lack of skill of being able to make something like this, this well, even if I had the tools, that makes me think there is still a 5% chance it was aftermarket.
I tend to disagree , it would not be that hard to make, all you need is some good welding skills, which practice makes. Then some carefull bending. Bobs your uncle all made. That’s only my opinion. Cheers Rob
No, not hard to make at all. You don't even need to weld. Brazing would do. And it actually looks like this specimen was brazed.
Again, it probably comes back to my lack of skills. Even with the right tools, if I tried to bend the two rings into shape then weld them closed and then weld the rings perfectly level with each other, forget it. I'd I tried welding, or braising as Christer thinks, three legs to such a small area and keep them perfectly straight so they married up perfectly to 3 holes at their base, again, forget it. Of course, it seems those with the skills to do such a thing as this, it is easy for them (you). Even though you blokes could do it with your eyes closed, I'd never attempt it. My effort would look like a drunken, 3 legged, camel splayed out. @shagratork thanks for the better description term. Combined trivet-legs.
Probably used a stove for a fixture, and a flat plate to clamp the rings to. Not going to say "easy," but far less complicated than you're imagining.
The hardest part would seem to be making good circular rings. Bend the legs at 90 Deg. and there only 6 braze points.
I have seen similar setups before on some stoves. I guess it's kind of a natural thing to do when the legs disappear, and you still need to use the stove. And to combine the legs with the pan ring(s) is perhaps not the best on a foldable camping stove you want to pack in its tin box, but pretty practical otherwise. As I said in another thread, I am rummaging around in the basement, scrapping a lot of stoves and lamps, and I remembered that one of the junk stoves actually had a similar contraption! Just much more crummy. It was on an crappy old Radius 21, and I managed to dig it out from the boxes again so I could take a couple of pictures. Really bad job... And why did the 'inventor' place the smaller ring on the wrong side of the 'spokes'? But I guess it did the job anyway:
