I used viton O-rings to replace old hard tank lid seals. It's been a success. They seal very well, and the lid doesn't need much tightening to seal well IMG_20180912_171015.jpg

O-ring works well for tank lids, especially for those that has an air relief screw on the top of the lid. (Then on inner side there is nice groove where o-ring sits)

I have been thinking to try small o-ring for NRV pip but that test is still on my to-do list...

@Afterburner I think I will just buy the stamped Viton NRV discs that Ross is selling from his store

Ive been using viton o rings on my SVEA 123/R, Meva kero stove, Optimus 111B and many more, as well as my lanterns for over a year now without problems. I guess this is only a test of time.

Take the above Veritas Duo--Burn, the 11/16" OD 1/8" section viton o-ring fits snugly in the cap and perfectly fits the filler neck. The o-ring can't go anywhere and seals so easily. The stove is extinguished by releasing the cap, with the escaping gasses flowing down the machined slot away from the burner, whatever the seal

I must have chosen 1/8" section o-rings for their good overlap

    In my opinion .....
The surface area of a flat Viton washer is a much better solution, long term, than a Viton o-ring.
I have used o-rings as a temporary fix.

These are pressure devices with flammable liquids. I do not take that lightly and use whatever precautions, and advice from wiser members, seriously.
You can do as you wish, it is your stove.

    Peace,
    Ken in NC

So far flat viton seals have not been hard to find for all my stoves. It is clear that the designs were meant for a flat seal. Round on round, as an o ring presents, gives a very small surface area to seal. A flat seal will "deform" to mimic the shape of the rounded filler top, giving a much larger surface area that is sealed. Seals are cheap and our host here at CCS sells them. What more could be said?

Speaking of O-rings, my current fettle, primus 41 has an O-ring tank seal of my own fitting. It was fitted about 12 years and hasn't been used since. It was sticking and hard to remove the cap. Looks like one of my early Buna ones - suitable for water. I'll report back on it's condition
