Note: Your burner should not look as beaten up as this one. See here.

This post will also show disassembling the SRV on the fuel cap, and disassembling the Optimus pump cap and SRV.

    Disassembling the burner.

    1. Remove the stove from the tin.

    2. The spirit dish should unscrew like this.

If it doesn't you might need a bit of heat and cooling, plus penetrating oil.

    3. Make sure the control spindle has been turned fully to the right (to retract the cleaning needle). Then use the correct tool to remove the nipple (two examples of tools are shown).

    4. Turn the control spindle fully to the left to lift the cleaning needle and rack. Turn the stove upside down to release the cleaning needle and rack.

    5. Unscrew the packing nut.

    6. Unscrew the control spindle.

    7. Unscrew the nut that seals the burner to the tank.

    P1030022.jpg

If the nut is very tight, you may need to put the spanner in a vise and loose the connection by unscrewing the tank from the nut.

    8. Remove the brass gauze from the burner fuel tube.

The burner was cleaned in the following series of soaks: first "Marine Clean"; second in dilute citric acid; third in acetone.

Disassembling the filler cap and SRV

    1. Apply some heat to the SRV to free up the thread lock (here with propane).

    2. Grip the hex nut on the cap with the correct size spanner.

    IMG_9563.jpg

    3. Use the correct spanner to fit the shape of the top of the SRV nut (in this case a square spanner, curtesy of The Fettle Box). Unscrew the SRV nut from the filler cap. Keep count of the number of turns as this will allow you to screw it back to the correct tension.

Disassembly of the Optimus Pump Cap

    IMG_9572.jpg

    1. Using a drill chuck, grip the bottom tube of the pump cap assembly and unscrew the cap.

    IMG_9573.jpg

    2. use a piece of leather to protect the SRV end of the pump cap.

    3. This time unscrewing the top of the SRV cap with a penta spanner.

Reassembly of the Optimus No. 199

Even though I had a new control spindle with a sealing washer, I found that it did not work properly - so I used some graphite sheet bought from @Trojandog. It did a much better job.
    P1020748.jpg

    1. Screw in the control spindle. Fit the washer and graphite over the control spindle and into the packing box.
    P1020749.jpg

    2. Screw in the packing nut.

    3. Put the brass gauze back into the fuel tube.

    4. turn the control spindle full to the right, and with this method, place the needle and rack into the burner so that its teeth are facing the notches of the control spindle.

    P1020753.jpg

    5. Turn the control spindle to the left while gently pressing down on the needle rack and listen for 4 clicks. Then turn the control spindle fully to the right.

    P1020755.jpg

    6. Replace the nipple snug tight.

    P1020756.jpg

    P1020757.jpg

    7. Check that the cleaning needle is operating properly (fully left is up for the needle).
    P1020758.jpg

    8.Replace the spirit dish

    P1020761.jpg

    9. Put some copper grease or similar on the thread of the tank.

    P1020759.jpg

    P1020760.jpg

    10. Tighten very tight while ensuring that the burner is level.

    P1020762.jpg

Then put the whole kit back together...
