Just picked up a 530 at the Coleman campout at Gordon's campground in Indiana to replace my cracked one. It looked rough at first but with a little maintenance, Neatsfoot on the leather and a new cap seal. A lot of cleaning, I think it turned out great. Just now gotta clean up the can and find the accessories. I think only a wrench and funnel went with this. Is there anything else for this stove?
Nice stove.Yes the funnel is correct.I had found one of these years ago.It had been in a fire and all the solder joints were beyond repair.So it became my first Frankie.Enjoy the new stove.
Should I add a preheat cup for winter use? The one for kerosene lanterns should slide right on without modification.
I think I read someplace that the US ones came with the wrench and funnel Canadian version just the wrench. Of course if someone has other information I will stand corrected. Seems like just as soon as I think I know something that apparently I don't. lol I've never had any trouble starting mine up the few times I've used it in the Winter but any extra preheat would surely accelerate the firing process.
Will just get some flare up even in warm temps. Many dont like a flare up, to me, part of the fun. Duane
Ok so now I have to search for funnels! Are they the same as Milspec lantern funnels? I already need one of those.
@Detroithiker Great stove, looks good all shined up. A preheat cup is on my list of mods, although I doubt I'll carry a separate fuel for it. Starting will get your attention and make your wife question your sanity even more. As a "mil-spec" stove, I find that ironic/amusing. Not much going to give your position away like a three foot flame followed by a sound like a 747 going to full power for takeoff roll.
A simmer plate can also be useful, you can make one that fits in the bottom of the can. Best regards, Wim
Hi @Detroithiker Whilst the designed starting method for the 530 works perfectly well and is a great show, I decided to add the preheat cup as it gives me a quick consistent start every time, especially when up in the snow and wifey is waiting for coffee. I made mine from a plumbing end cap, drilled to snug fit vaporizer and sit above the nut As it is not sealed I filled it with fiberglass rope Under 10mls of meths will burn around 2 minutes, (which isn't really any quicker than designed start up, just less intimidating to others) once meths is nearly gone I can open the valve to pretty much full noise straight away. Simmer plate I made from SS I had laying around and it fits in can under stove when packed, it does help if cooking and reheating food rather than just boiling water No funnel came with my Canadian either. Funnel did not come with the last of the batches. 1946 & 1947 A is the 1st half of the year B is the second half of the year 46A, 46B, 47A, 47B And, this was not a GI stove, civilian only. Post WWII.
Yeah I know, the military version was the 520, I was just using the common name and actually thought Coleman called the 530GI to show it was a civilian version of the military stove
There's also a simmer plate to go with the stove. The preheat cup for a M1950 fits perfectly on the 530. The 520 and 530 are very different animals. Murph
Yeah they look a bit different but I read it was based on the 520. I had a chance to buy a 520 as well but it was more than I was willing to pay
My stove does not like to light in cool night air so I think I will be adding a preheat cup. Once it gets hot it runs great but it is just stubborn lighting at first. Perhaps it needs a little seafoam.
I ran a good bit of B12 carb cleaner through mine, still does that. Without preheat, the afterburner takeoff seems to be pretty normal.
