Greetings, All, Recently, I bought a small Optimus-Primus burner, which looked to be in good shape. I wasn't sure about the riser until it arrived, the recognized it immediately. The spirit cup, however, seems another matter! I've never seen a spirit cup with a totally flat bottom, as this one has. Please give it a look, and let me know your thoughts on who made it, and where I might find more info on it. So, what do you think, Fellow Stovies? I'd guess the rising tube and spirit cup did not come with this burner, but they fit it just fine. I screwed the set into an old Optimus 00 fuel tank, and pumped it all up. Happy to see the burner passes air quite nicely. I can return yet another 00 back to service, with this set. But, I "may" have other plans. We'll see..... It looks like an expansion plug (frost plug) out of a car engine that has been drilled and installed. I have used them for this purpose before...
@Doc Mark @OptimusPrime I agree it doesn’t look like it commenced life as a stove component, though it’s brass and the automobile engine core plugs I’ve encountered have been steel. A priming cup with the raised centre places the burner hexagon flats above the top rim of the cup, enabling a wrench to engage properly. The flat-bottomed cup doesn’t and a wrench would have to be engaged by tipping it downwards. I can’t believe a stove component manufacturer would create that mis-match. John
Hi @Doc Mark , as John and Optimus Prime say, it looks like an improvised spirit cup. In this thread you can see a similar approach that I took: Both the initial flat- bottomed, and later shaped spirt cup, were re-purposed from their original function: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/1937-primus-no-85.11406/ I have seen core plugs for engines made from Brass on automobile engines, and Monel, a Nickel/copper alloy for Marine engines. Now that I look at it, it DOES look something like a freeze plug. A little different, but very, very similar, so that is probably what it is. I had sent the seller a note, telling him that the spirit cup was not in any catalog of which I knew, and I wasn't too sure about the rising tube, either. I made him an offer that I felt was fair, and he accepted it right away. So, I was prepared for the spirit cup to not work out for me. I have looked through my parts caddy, and found a replacement spirit cup that, whilst not from Primus, or Optimus, IS a real spirit cup, and fits the O/P burner, perfectly.
