I'd like to find some type of goop that will strip the metallic oxides from my burner bowl, with a little help from a bronze brush or steel wool. I have no clue as to what bronze alloy Optimus used for their burners- any ideas? Also high time to clean the burner pre-heat cup; to use a term from my Generation, it's gettin' a bit grody... May as well just strip the stove down and do it the right way.........it's ALL gettin' a bit grody!
The burner of your stove is a brass, rather than a bronze (likely around 60/40 Copper/Zinc). As for cleaning have a look at this old thread: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/stove-restoration-parts-1-to-4.3963/ Section 2 gives instructions for cleaning stoves using citric acid solution. if you decide to remove a burner for external cleaning, follow the instructions so the the cleaning needle and internals do not come into contact with the citric acid solution. if you do remove the burner, replace the heat resistant burner washers with new ones on reassembly. If you want to get really complicated, read this: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/ultrasonic-cleaning-of-stove-burners.27409/ Best Regards, Kerophile.
A hundred-weight of Thanks Kerophile! Ever time I get to digging in older postings for Gold wisdom, I end up discovering another 10 rabbit-holes I have to check.........Lacquer on the burner? Most intriguing........
