Where may I find graphite packing . I see it's needed around the spindle area close to the packing ring. Also when installing the needle on an 8R stove why does it leak when opened . Also does he gears that has the needle is itvplaced inward so the gears move it up and down easily. Cheers Pete Unwin
Hardware stores and/or big lumber stores (Lowe’s, Home Depot) have it in the plumbing section. Not cheap but you shouldn’t need a lot.
No it is a long ribbon. I am far from an accomplished fettler like the frequent posters on this forum so am hesitant in offering repair advice. I have found the tutorials available through the search engine on this forum extremely helpful as are the people on it. I will say that if you able to post photographs with your questions of the part and or area in need, you will get a better response as English is not the first language of everyone but everyone speaks stoves. I have read your other posts and may suggest that, if financially possible, you buy a decent little LP canister stove to meet your deadline and take your time and learn the parts, processes, and joy of operating your 8r without pressure of a time deadline to do so. I make the suggestion as it would be a shame to ruin a fun experience with frustration. It is a fine classic stove, worthy of years of hiking and camping cooking joy but needs an operator who understands the in and outs of the machine to be totally reliable. Graphite sheets can be cut into short, narrow strips, then rolled around the spindle, then the packing nut cinched down enough to stop leakage and allowing the knob to be rotated still without a lot of friction. The strips will form around the parts making a seal when the nut is tightened. Duane

In response to the get a gassie. If time comes to the issue, a quality gassie is not an inexpensive expense. The 8R is probably one of the most simply repaired stoves made. If the metal is sound .... Then a fill cap gasket and an SRV is easily changed. The graphite packing is very rarely needed to be replaced. The wick is also rarely needed to be replaced. The stove will work with a charred wick. But, not as well. To really help you @Peter Unwin it would help if you can describe all of what is wrong. (I know that you have several threads going at the same time about the same stove.) You probably have the fill cap on and tight. The pressure in the tank will push fuel up. Do you know how to use this stove well enough? I ask, because that is how one primes the stove. Dribble fuel up the jet and into the priming dish. Ken in NC

You report the cross post. The mods then decide if it warrants being fixed. Two threads of basically the same problem is not that uncommon.
@Peter Unwin I can send you some 1/4" graphite ribbon. PM me your address and we can work it out. I bought a 50 foot roll for 15.00 USD and I will never use it all.
