    Why is it that so many of the kerosene fueled devices suffer from this? It's not like a positive fuel shut off is that difficult a piece of technology.

    I guess in 1895 they thought it unecessary and never bothered to change the basic design.

    Seems to have survived the intervening years with the odd ooops moment along the way.

    Or European walkers were happy to wander the moors smelling of paraffin. :)

    Nice find!

    So, other posts seem to indicate the thread on the Hurlock will accept other common burners. How difficult would it be to fit a regulated burner? Too tall?

    It would likely be too tall. I think most Hurlock owners value the historical accuracy over the convenience of not leaking.
