This is a Companion (kerosene) stove I have never seen before. It has been used, but very little and came in very good condition. The only fettling I did was to replace the washers and seals and clean it with soapy water. It is designed, I think, as an indoor stove. With sliding drip tray: The workings, with covers removed: Underneath: The burner: The pump is a standard bore, but with a 'simple' NRV set up which screws directly to the end of the pump tube from the outside: The pip was cork (crumbly) so it was replaced with a 4.5mm viton pip from The Fettlebox. Fuel cap and pressure release valve: The outer burner caps are brass and the inner steel: More images to come.
Hello Tony Press. Nice stove you have there and the first of its type that I have seen. Great condition as well. It is amazing all the different makes and models that are still getting found around the world. Thanks for showing it. John
Tony that is such a great looking stove. It was certainly designed for indoor use but would be fine to use for 'car camping'. It is in such amazing condition and is a stove of beauty. I would also like to thank you for the wonderfully detailed photos which are perfect for the Gallery.
The full instruction sheet for this stove is here: https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/29304 Cheers Tony
@Tony Press A bit more information. I found an add for the stove in a catalogue dated 1960 (Page 288 under Blowlamps last entry on page) Trove Catalogue - McPhersons. Newmarket Saleyards, Newmarket, 1960 Source: Museums Victoria https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/items/272167
@ROBBO55 Excellent catalogue! There are a few things I've picked up over the years that are also in there. I'll have to look at it in more detail when I'm back home. Cheers Tony
Hi @Tony Press and other stovies We also have one of these stoves! It's a bit of a fickle beast but we're learning the ins and outs of fettling. Ours is different in that it uses an external tank located under the floor of the boat. See below the before and afters of our restoration. The current challenges seem to be around quality fuel (I've cleaned the burners 3 times so far this year) and getting parts. Currently the pricking needles are both broken and need replacing. We are considering purchasing some new Hanse No.1s burners from the UK. I'm suspicious there may be problems with the burners, they only last an hour or so when cleaned. Cheers, Reuben
@Reuben Kent Is your stove set up for burning kerosene? Or is it set up to burn alcohol? Or are you using diesel? What country are you from? Best regards Tony
Hi @Tony Press, The Boat is in Port Huon, Tasmania Not too far away from your stove! The stove is set up for Kerosene. This stove would have been in the boat for around 60 years. It was installed in Melbourne where the boat was built. I've just learned that the Hanse No 1 Burners are not available anymore. Sounds like some more tinkering is ahead of me. Cheers, Reuben
Rueben I’m in Prague at the moment. I’d be happy to help out when I’m back in Tasmania later this month. Cheers Tony @Reuben Kent
Hi @Reuben Kent . Ref Hanse burners availability, I had read this: Optimus 207b burner exploded view Is your information more up-to-date? Best Regards, Kerophile.
Hi @kerophile, I made an enquiry with Spares Marine in the UK just yesterday. They told me about the fire and that burners will not be available for some time. @Tony Press, any help you could offer would be much appreciated! Cheers, Reuben
@Reuben Kent I’d be happy to come down with my kit and see if we can get your stove operating properly, but it will be late in July (if you can wait that long). Cheers Tony
@Reuben Kent Are you still looking to get this stove going properly? I realise that I’ve neglected to get back to you. Tony
Hi Tony, I missed this last year! The boat is still in the Huon Valley and we're still using the stove. It's burning a lot better but if you're keen to come for a visit I'd love to get some tips from a pro! Cheers, Reuben
I just bought an identical stove for AU$27 in the Glenorchy tip shop. It's not in quite as good condition as yours, but no leaks. There is only one issue that the right burner burns yellow... I can't get a blue flame. Your thoughts would be welcome. I think the burner assemblies are identical to these: 1 X STOVE SILENT BURNER KEROSENE PARAFFIN STOVE CAMPING STOVE on ebay. Also... I might move the handle to the side... as where it is seems really awkward due to the pressure pump and fuel inlet fitting fouling on to the hand. I'll post some pics next time.
