I don't know if this is were to post, or this might be obvious to some of you, but I have this little burner. It is marked Manning Bowman Pat. Im not sure how it works. I don't know if it is missing anything or what kind of fuel it takes. I assume alcohol. Can some one post instructions? Thanks in advance.
Hi, minach, Welcome to CCS!! I believe that your burner was actually used underneath a chaffing dish, to help keep cooked foods warm. I "think" that the Meths is drawn up into the burner by a wick, and that you have to let the wick saturate with Meths before trying to light your burner. Have you checked in the Stove Reference Gallery, or the Instructions area here at CCS? There might be further information there for you. Good luck, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
There is a priming wick on the other side from the valve. Should also be the fill point. Fill it with Denatured alcohol. Let it soak for about 15-20 minutes, the wicks will be dry. The you open the valve. Light the preheater which will heat the burner up vaporizing the alcohol. Once the main burner lights close the top to the priming wick let it get good and hot with the valve fully open. once its going nice then you can use the valve to adjust it. Here is a link on mine which is not adjustable but will give you an idea. The video is the second post Mack https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/29286
Thanks for the replies. I searched around on the site but couldn't find anything like it. Here is a picture from the other side. It might not show, but there is a stem in the center with a couple small holes. There is also a small tube by one of the "legs" holding up the ring. I filled the burner and let it sit, but nothing seems to light when I hold a flame to it. Not too sure how to pre heat it. The knob only turns a quarter of a turn and "ON" is printed on top of the tube holding the shaft…hope this all makes sense. Thanks for your help.
Did you take the fill cap off and put alcohol in the tank? How about a side view, both sides? Ken in NC
there has to be a pre heat wick from looking at the pic the center stem may be it or where you fill the cap looks like it has and indentation that covers a wick. Mack
Ok, now this is getting to be more then a passing curiosity…. I filled with denatured alcohol and let sit over night and still doesn't light. I stuck a small wire down the tube by the "leg" but I don't think it extends down into the tank. The cap has a small thin gasket on it, and I noticed writing going around the top of the cap…." ? & B VAPO? ?AM? " (M&B Vapor Lamp?) Its very hard to read. Attached are pictures of both sides and the front with the cap off. What looks like spillage is actually a dry sticky residue. Do you think there is something missing? Maybe something that goes in the small tube by the leg? Does it take another type of fuel? I have another Manning Bowman, but it has a little pump to preheat the burner before lighting that works good…this one kind of baffles me. Thanks for your replies.
I think it is intact. Compare with this example from ebay: ebayManningBowman I would try filling that moat around the top with alcohol and lighting to see if that will preheat it.
Thank you for all the replies. I finally did get it to light. It took about 3 minutes to preheat, but it burns good. I can't imagine what they used before bic lighters....must of gone through a lot of matches. I still wonder about the tube attached to the leg. It doesn't go into the tank, just attached to the leg. Thanks again for the help.
Are you really sure that tube attacked to the leg has not got a small hole going into the tank. It looks to be in a good position as a preheater tube that you would light to preheat the burner crown. Of course I may well be wrong.
I have the exact same model M B burner (edit- excepting it is in nickle ) with a very ornate chaffing dish. In my researching it I stumbled onto this gem from what appears to be a college library, so I'm pretty sure it's public domain. I have downloaded it and will upload it with either the chaffing dish I posted or in the documents section. ( I'm sure Ross or an admin will let me know if it's in the wrong spot or move it after I get it uploaded? :-) ;-) ) https://archive.lib.msu.edu/DMC/sliker/msuspcsbs_manb_manningbow2/msuspcsbs_manb_manningbow2.pdf
