I believe they are largely the same apart from paint color and decals. I’m certain the generators are interchangeable.
Hello JP2, Your title is "Coleman 400" there are sooo many search results for the 400 I've no idea what link you may recall? A link re differences between 400 vs 400A... or details (differences) for 400, 400A, 400B, 440, 442... I'm not sure. For the 400 vs 400A... you can be equally happy with either one, both are the 2 lever models , for better flame control. I searched comments "omc" made re 400A and found this link. which includes: "...on '79 400: fuel tube is brass & schraeder is brass/SS, at some point that changed. I am quite sure the '89 400A fuel tube & schraeder differ from early 400s. BTW note the collar that receives the fuel tube differs on your 400 vs on your 400A. at some point coleman made tank change(s) as well. so yes, some plumbing differs (PNs may or may not reflect this) that said functionally / performance / dependability is same 400 & 400A AFIK. thx omc " With the many many more Coleman 400 comments on CCS (many omc engaged in as well) there are more details / threads out there. thx omc
The brown 400 has a brass fuel pickup. It has a 3 position valve: off, light, and run. The black 400A switched to the instant light plastic fuel pickup. The valve has only 2 positions: off and run. The new fuel pickup requires no manual change to switch the fuel intake from the top of the tube for starting to the bottom of the tube for running. Coleman engineers figured out by designing the ports correctly the fuel pickup would switch to the bottom as the stove warmed up. They use the same generator with the black flame control lever. Brad
@JP2 , Brad is right about the differences between the 400 and the 400A. I have both, and even some later models, but much prefer the original Model M400.
