Hi. I have recently purchased a pair of Coleman 400a stoves. One works and the other has a blocked generator. Before I fork out for a new generator, is it possible to use a later, more readily available, and cheaper generator by converting the 400 to some other single valve type model? If this is indeed possible, has anybody done it and what is involved? Regards
The later style generator has the tip cleaner actuated by a wire attached to the valve at the tank end, the result is inferior flame control. The earlier style is widely preferred. I believe you would have to retrofit the 400B valve to accommodate the later style generator, I believe this would negate the savings of the less expensive generator.
Yes you can. Simple to do. You will need 3 parts valve, generator and generator bracket. Your existing Generator bracket will not work so you need a new one. A new valve with the eccentric block that has the eyelet for the Generator hook. Your existing valve has this hook removed. Bracket P/N # 400A1261, Valve P/N 400-5551, Generator P/N 400B2891. Use plumbers dope on the threads when installing the valve. Remove the Generator bracket, remove the generator, remove the burner rings and burner box. Place the stove upside down and valve into a vice. Turn the tank to remove the valve. Do not use a wrench. These instruction differ in the generator bracket, Generator hook connection to the valve eccentric block. https://classiccampstoves.com/attac...ight-backpack-stove-model-400a701-pdf.195483/ OldColemanParts.com :: Stove Parts :: Generator Bracket New Style OldColemanParts.com :: Stove Parts :: Valve As OldColemanParts.com :: Just Generators :: Generator Stove
