Greetings, All, A good friend, and fellow Stovie asked me about the order in which the MSR yellow pumps were produced. So, in answer to his question, I'm posting a photo of the order in which the first MSR pumps came on the scene. Three of these pumps came with my MSR #9. As each pump had problems, MSR sent replacements to the original owner of my #9. Those pumps will be marked with *, so you can see the order in which MSR sent them to the original owner. Left to right: First commercially sold MSR white pump, with square regulating knob *; First replacement pump, is identical to the first pump, but with a round regulating knob; Second replacement pump is the same as the preceding replacement, except that it's yellow, and is made of a better type of plastic. This is the first MSR yellow pump *; Next up is the third replacement pump *, which is yellow with a black pump knob and uses cotter pins to hold the pump rod assembly in place; and, the last yellow MSR pump is the one of the far right. This one is the "best of breed" of the yellow pumps, in my opinion. However, all the yellow pumps "can" be refurbished, if you know what you are about, and if you are exceedingly careful in their use. Though I do refurbish them, and use them occasionally, I prefer to keep them for show, and use the newest MSR pumps, when actually going out and about. I hope this of help to those who are interested in these old MSR pumps. Again, I strongly suggest that owners of the older MSR stoves, buy and use the newest MSR pumps. They are the most robust, and work very well, indeed! If you have questions, please give me a shout, and I'll do my best to answer them. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
Morning, @DAVE GIBSON , Dave, Dating them, exactly, is a hard thing to go, mainly because MSR only sent out replacement pumps to those whose pump body had cracked, or deformed. I'd say the first three pumps in my photo were used from the 1972-73 time period, with the original MSR #9. The pump with the cotter-pinned rod, I believe, came out with the introduction of the MSR #9A, or soon thereafter, and carried over through the MF, DF, G, and GK. The MSR catalog of 1980 still shows that pump being used with the G and GK. In 1981, however, the last yellow pump was introduced, again with the G and GK, and replaced all the previous models pumps. That pump lasted up through the first versions of the X-GK, and wasn't replaced until the grey and black pump came out, in the mid-1980's. My 1987 X-GK came with that black and grey pump. Getting it closer to that may well be hard to do. As an aside, concerning the later MSR pumps, beginning with the grey and black pump, none of those that came after were worth much, and some were dangerous! When the latest MSR pump was designed and offered, we have, at last, a good, strong, and reliable pump that, with proper use, and maintenance, will offer good safe and dependable service. Just my 'tuppence, but, there you have it! I hope that helps. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
@Doc Mark You are a fountain of knowledge - thank you for always sharing it willingly - for that I tip my hat!
@ROBBO55 , @Harder D. Soerensen , Rob and Harder, Thank you both, very much, for your kind words! Dating things in a proper manner, is oft-times hard, with stoves and such. For example, it would be easier if Optimus had dated their stoves, as Primus did, and if MSR had not destroyed all their excellent documentation, after the company had changed hands a few times!! The folks at MSR that did that, simply did not believe that the information was of any value, to anyone!! It's only through the kindness and sharing of those who post here, that we have any such information, at all! I'm thankful to @Giri , and others, who have shared earlier MSR catalogs and newsletters here!! At CCS, we all learn from one another, and we all try to teach one another. What a wonderful place this is!! I've been a fan of MSR stoves ever since I saw my first one, and after reading the excellent writings of people like Colin Fletcher, and others, back in the day. After buying my first MSR X-GK stove, I was hooked for good! Anything I know about MSR stoves has come through my own experiences, and also from the writings of those whom I have long admired and appreciated. I am happy to contribute in whatever way I can. Long may we all keep learning from each other, and teaching each other!! Thanks, again, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
thanks..that gives me what I thought was a good date for my first yard sale MSR stove, the one with the long tube.
Hey, Dave, Most of the early MSR stoves had that same fuel tube. How about some photos of your stove? If I see some photos, I should be able to tell you what model it is, and an approximate date. Take care, and God Bless! Doc
Is this it Dave? https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/new-years-collection-clean-up.40019/#post-422955
Dave, If the stove in the photo that Ken posted, is yours, I'd call that a GK, which is a very good stove, and predecessor to the X-GK, which came abit later. Nice stove! Doc
