I wanted a hot smoking burner for smoking fish that would burn longer than a pop can burner, and I knew a Turm 144 would fit the bill. However, being a tinkerer, I wanted to make my own, and a cheap source of burners in the UK is from old Camping Gaz stoves. So I decided to modify a Bleuet 200 burner to run with a meths (alcohol) generator, and so I copied the Turm 144 design by feeding the meths into the side of a Bleuet burner. The 'generator' is 8mm copper tubing flattened where it passes over the burner head, and with a roll of fine gauze packed into the inlet side of the flattened area. The feed was a flexible setup to be able to adjust the liquid pressure head above the burner to get the correct inlet pressure. For this setup with the gauze restrictor and a 1.5mm feed hole next to the burner, the correct head is about 10 cm (4 - 6 in) above the burner. Initially the burner self primes and then fires up as the generator gets hot No point wasting meths, so a brew was organised Next step is to make a tank and fittings and a neater generator/burner set up to fit under my fish smoker. Oh, and a regulator valve!!
@Twoberth Ingenious, Duncan. You’ll appreciate the simple burner concept of this early Phoebus alcohol stove, where the flame from a jet set centrally in the priming pan impinges on the vapourising tube above it. John
That Phoebus is beautiful. Elegant simplicity at its best. Pity the Enders design engineers didn't have this mentality when they designed the 9061D!
