I have these 3 outer caps for 111c that cracks and are falling apart. They are a bit different from caps for 111t, and this have i not seen om 111t caps earlier. Anyone got thoughts about this?

The funny thing is that i have not seen this before on optimus caps, but all the optimus caps i have seen are from 111T. (I have seen plenty of 111T through my military service, and in my civillian life too) These 3 are from 111C. Are they of poorer quality?

I've only had one cap I believe that looked like yours. Under burn by previous owner? Very well used?

Non of the burners was hurt ny underburn on top of pipe.
These caps was of slightly different design than those of the 111T that was quite ok... those on 111T are older.

I have seen similar damage on some Primus caps that seem to be badly rusted when sitting on burner and then heated. In the 111C era it seems that Optimus started to make parts production cheaper over all so maybe it is a material issue.

I also wonder if its something with the metal. These were not more rusted than the 111T caps that was in the same lot of 111's. And the 111T caps was no issue.

I have a few in similar condition and have always assumed that it was due to repeated use. Any chemists here may have a view on whether heating metal increases it's rusting rate. There isn't a great amount of material keeping the holes apart.

Simes, are they of the 111C or the 111T type? 111T has straight sides, and 111C has curved sides (see my pictures first in the thread, those are all from 111C.)

    My first thought is storage.
    Dry/wet.
    Hot/cold.
    Humid/dry.
    Used Often/Not.

Sorry @Lumberjack, they are from normal domestic silents.

It would be very hard to discover if Optimus changed material specs between stove models especially the outer cap.

There were changes clearly due to production costs and availability, but I assume they were classed as consumable and would be replaced quite regularly, especially in a domestic environment.
