Good day all, Wondering if anyone has experience with this stove? I have one on my boat and I want to confirm if the marine alcohol is first supposed to seap out from the very bottom of the unit as seen in picture ? Light that first , then the actual burner? The second photo shows it more close up as to where the alcohol comes out first. It's an older Kenyon 103 on my Sea Ray. Thank you.
Hi, @dande , Welcome to CCS! I have one of those stoves, and they way it's supposed to work, is that you pump up some pressure in the fuel tank, then, when ready to prime, open up the regulator just a little bit. The Meths fuel should dribble out the jet/orifice, and gather in the depression at the bottom of your circular area. Be sure not to get "too much" Meths down there. Close the regulator wheel, and then light the gathered fuel under the burner. When it's about burned out, open the regulating wheel a bit, and then, if necessary, use a match to light the burner. Once the flame gathers it's strength, and turns blue, then you can slowly open the regulating wheel a bit more, and pump in more pressure, if needed. There is a cleaning needle in the burner, so when you're ready to turn the stove off, run the regulating, counter-clockwise, to clean the jet, then fully clock-wise to turn off the stove. I hope all that makes sense to you. Remember, if the flame gets away from you, you can use plain old water to douse the flames!! Meths is the only fuel for which water is the recommended thing to douse the stove!! Good luck, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc PS - be SUPER careful when using that regulating wheel!! Yes so what is happening when I start it is I pump the stove and when I open the wheel a bit the fuel comes out from the very bottom of the device (not the burner area), then I have been lighting that and then the alchol come out of the burner area after I open it a bit more then I light then burner, it this right?
It doesn't seem right to me. Priming fuel should flow from the burner downward to the priming cup. You seem to be indicating leaks in the supply line. This video demonstrates a similar lighting procedure to that of your Kenyon. Note how fuel flows into the burner then down into the cup where it's lit. The left burner clearly shows the process.
@dande , @Laitch , is right. The priming fuel HAS to come from the jet. If you fuel is leaking out from the bottom of the burner connection, the STOP TRYING TO LIGHT IT, IMMEDIATELY!! A leak where you describe it, means that your gaskets have hardened, or cracked, and that your stove in now in need of replacing those will new, pliable gaskets. Doing anything other than that, will cause a conflagration! There is also an aluminum cone inside the burner, that also functions somewhat as a seal, but also allows you to make sure the burner is oriented in the proper position. All that will need replacing. I've done several of those jobs, and it's not hard. You will just have to spend some time, here at CCS, reading the information in the Fettling area, to learn how to do this, safely.
