I’ve had this Sievert furnace in storage for a couple of years but only now got around to checking it out. It came shiny, not really in keeping with its age (1920’s) and likely previous use. Whatever. As I usually do I stripped the stove down to its components parts, replacing seals (filler cap, external non-return valve), pump cup washer and heatproof washers (8) for the burners. Stove was missing priming cups or the ‘cups and troughs’ common to multiple burner furnaces. Last year at our Newark gathering I spotted a bunch of Svea primer cups. Four purchased with this project in mind. Distinctive flame tubes, each marked ‘Max Sievert’. I de-coked the burners, removing the jet nipples then getting each one in turn up to red heat, letting them cool down then blowing through each one with compressed air. New jet nipples installed, burners polished up. External NRV. I had my doubts about the integrity of the soldering on the NRV fitting on the tank and removed it (de-soldered) to be sure. Evident is the thick gauge of brass the tank is made of. The fitting. Cleaned up and offering it up for fit, residue of old solder removed. Fluxed, marker pen to prevent solder running. Soldered back in place, NRV re-installed. Some details. Fuelled up, primed, ignition! John
As I was scrolling down through the pictures I was actually thinking WE NEED A MOVIE! Then there it was. So what do you think it was actually used for? So cool. Thanks for posting, John. Alex
Could have been a domestic setting Alex, heating a boiler (a lot of water!) More often in a commercial context, again to heat a large amount of water. I’ll be using it as a wok burner, as my pal Henry was doing here with a 4-burner Primus. This Primus ... searing meat before slow cooking John
I've got a 6 burner stashed in my garage somewhere. I really like your wok stand. I'll have to make one and get that sucker fired up. Ben
Great work John, I can see it’s suitable for a wock burner, so much power. Well done , I can also see that it will get good use. Cheers Rob
Such a beautiful monster @presscall ! Like Alex, I was hoping for a video as I was scrolling, thanks for posting it!!
