A guy is selling a MSR XGK stove on E Bay. The Bakelite base is in very rough shape. It would obviously have to be removed to fix it. I thought about buying it, but the base leaves a lot to be desired. Can you remove it easily? Can it be put back together? I'm sure my years as a mechanic can come up with something. I looked at buying Bakelite but I don't believe it is sold in sheet form. I know dominoes are made of Bakelite but anyone have experience with this? Maybe hockey pucks?
Since you're in the US, I'd go ahead and give MSR a call. Their customer support number is 800-531-9531. Hours are 8:00AM to 4PM PST.
Good luck emailing, I haven't received a response since February, I have a old phone, so can't call them. Duane
I had an issue when I ordered a maintenance kit through them a few months ago. I finally had to call them and the woman I spoke to fixed the issue. I doubt they would have a base to sell me on a stove not even made anymore.
The base of these stoves is riveted on making the repair do-able but I agree with you that a NOS replacement is probably not available. The XGK is a great stove to use and or collect but they come up fairly often at auction and in good condition. With said auction, the fuel bottle and the pump deserve consideration as collectibles.
I saw on E Bay you can buy Bakelite sheets but they are not cheap. I could epoxy it in the original base but not worth it. It comes with pump and fuel bottle but I got those already. I will pass.
