I have gotten intrigued by the good reviews of the Sigg Tourist set to use with my inherited SVEA 123... so I found one locally for a good price with 'damage' (see photo). Since the center ring seems to be intended to seal the tank from heat, I am wondering if this will be a serious problem.
Thanks for the quick reply. Think $50 is fair for that condition? (Full set, everything else seems in decent shape....)
I see that kind of damage when they used a pump on the stove and was run hot. Unless a stove is included offer $40
This is an unfamiliar concept; whence did you derive it? I'd drop the $50 myself. The Sigg, with a 123, is where it is at. Sigg sets aren't laying about as once they were. I bought mine with stove for $50-- 18 years ago. Welcome to CCS!
CW... that is interesting. I assumed someone had used it with the wrong type of stove and it got too hot. How does the pump result in it running hot? I have thus far only run it with a gas primer since the pump was temporarily lost. I was under the idea that the pump just provided the pressure instead of waiting for the tank to heat. Is it an overpressure issue? I should look that up for once I get the pump cap valve seals replaced...
Thanks Ed. I've lurked and read a bunch ever since I inherited the stove a year ago. I'm pretty sure this forum is what kept me from blowing myself up since my dad just handed it to me with: "here, it uses Naptha" and no instructions on how to light or operate it! Lol. I'm not sure which forum post I read that the inner ring acts as a heat shield to protect the tank from overheating (presumably both on the stock wind shield and the sigg setup). I could be mistaken about that?
That what it was designed to do but I have seen folks keep pumping to really pressurize (or very close to over pressurizing ) the stove. It does burn hotter but your running it on the edge of failure. Use the pump as it was designed for and they are a great addition.
Morning, All, @CW, I have to disagree with you, a tad, Sir. I have used the Optimus pump, to keep my stoves running in deep Winter, in snow, and at high altitude, for many decades, and used properly, the stoves are not, as you wrote, "on the edge of failure". Deep cold will suck the pressure right out of pressure stoves, and the pump keeps them running as intended. I've NEVER had a single failure, and that's in almost 40 years. For what it's worth...... Regarding the melting on the Sigg Tourist kit being discussed here, I think it's just fine to buy and use that kit. I don't think a 123, or 123R did that damage, but very probably someone tried to use a stove that was not designed for use with that kit. I have one on which that same area was cut away, by some previous owner. It will works fine. Take care, and God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I have a friend that I gifted a complete set to including the 123 with wind screen , The first time he used it he put the entire 123 w / screen inside and ran with the sigg windscreen up side down . The damage fit the description as shown . . Who would think ? Some just don't have an intuity about mechanical objects . His works fine even with the melted screen in correct stacking order . He sure was sheepish about the incident . WR
I bought mine last yr with the stove and a rm picnic stove $50. I think $50 for one in that condition maybe a little high. Is it complete? What kind of shape is the rest of it?
You can learn to tinker as well as fettle with a few Sigg Tourists in beat up shape. For me 50 is too much for that one. With patience I think you can still do better. Just my opinion. Your results may vary.
Doc, I agree with what you said especially the line "when used properly" they are great in the cold but what I was alluding to was would you run your stove the same way on a 80-90f day? the phrase "if a little is good more should be better" comes to mind. You can continue to pump and the stove and it will run like a blow torch and the flame pattern grows quite large. I have purchased a few sigg sets with the same damage and almost all came with a svea 123 with a pump cap. The flame pattern looks pretty symmetrical so i dont think a optimus 80 or simular size stove caused the problem, maybe they did fit the windscreen upside down. I do agree the set is fine to use, just be careful with the pump use it as intended and the set will be a joy to use.
I have hardly a stove I would run full out, which is probably what caused that damage. The self pressurizing stoves I usually have to throttle down a little after start up so the fuel use (flame) is more efficient and in some cases to save paint too . Only stove I use with no control is a alcohol stove like my Trail Designs 12-10. Duane
I don't think you'll find one cheaper until after you've bought your first one. At least that's been my experience when looking for a specific stove or lantern.
Thanks all, I was able to get it for $35 (everything else was in great shape) and then promptly ran into a problem with my rehabbed SRV cap, so I've not gotten to try using it yet. : /
