Just bought another 8R on E Bay - definitely would be an letter A but tank I'm sure is brass. Cant wait to light it up-however it didn't come with the wrench.
Hello folks, Alex here, haven't posted much latterly and having had a Heart attack earning a helicopter ride and a stent fitted, now feeling better. Please you folk out there in stove land "pay attention to Heart foundation info" Anyway a antique dealer friend gave me Optimus 8r (as a present for haunting this world for a bit longer)seems to be model A with brass tank, this is my first of this type of stove and I like it and can see why people rave about them.My question is where can I buy the spanner to complete this package, flame shots to follow. Warm regards Alex Mac
Sometimes they come up on E bay. Maybe basecamp as a lot of people here deal with. Take care of yourself 1st. I can see you hadn't had it easy. Glad you are feeling better!
@Toad of the Cape I was wondering why you've been a bit on the quiet side. I hope the problems with your ticker are all over now. You can buy the little spanner for the 8R on the the Bay of Evil from the UK seller "Juliands". Cheers Tony
Hello Tony, Yes I see Base camp also,8R Pete mentioned, will make inquires. My heart is working fine at the mo been partly up Mt Charles on the Otago Peninsula shooting bunny's yesterday with my bitch Tess and shot a few, thanks also for your concern, hope all is well in Taz. warm regards Alex
Looking at mine I have two none embossed "B" types and two "D" types of 8R. Three are branded Optimus and the other one is branded Primus. @Toad of the Cape Be careful man. I have been in that boat and it will take you places that you don't want to be. I had my last heart attack when I was 43 and that got me a triple bypass and two years later a stent also. I'll be 50 this year. Best wishes.
Yes I here you Cookie,I'm sixty next month and my lifestyle has changed but I still like a beer and going shooting with my dog Tess. warm regards Alex
Caravan camping and marine---manchester st ch ch have those spanners and a huge stock of spare parts too
I have a Primus 8R purchased new in 72 or 73 from Woolworths of all places. It has a handle on the case, hockey puck control knob, burner clip, and wrench with lid clip (clip fell off ). Foil label on case. A “B/C” style? Basil
I picked up my first Optimus this weekend at a friends garage sale. I had never seen one of these and new I had to scoop it up. $20 was a no brainer for this stove. I am guessing I have a A-B model as it shares some features of each. I have the embossed case but a brass tank, poker chip knob, burner clip, but missing the wrench.
@Ivanhoe67 Yours is “A” based on its component parts. The “A” versions would have had both brass and nickel-plated tanks. Best regards Tony
@Ivanhoe67 The very earliest may indeed have come only with nickel-plated tanks (see links below); but I’m sure they came out with brass only quite early as well. I’m checking the catalogues. 1959 catalogue with earlier Optimus No.8 (source: @optipri): Nickel-plated tanks. https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/1956-optimus-catalogue-1600.37610/ 1958 Price List (Source: @Staffan Rönn): Nickel-plated tanks. https://classiccampstoves.com/threads/optimus-1958-export-price-list.42869/ 1966 advertisement.
