34 TPI thread

    Hi All,
    I've ordered an M14.5x0.75 tap, but I also noticed that if I had a 58T change gear on my chinese lathe (lead screw pitch 1.5mm) I could cut a 33.997 TPI thread, actually better than you can do on a lathe with an imperial leadscrew. Such a change gear should be 3D printable - does anyone know if there is a source for one-off parts of this sort?

    i use ABS plastic 3D printed change gears on my lathe and it works great for a long time. there is no strong forces there but needs good lubrication.

    Well - I drew the gear with FreeCAD and sent it off to a 3D printing service. Perhaps it will work...

    The 58T printed gear worked perfectly - only needed to ream the bore. My design error luckily meant that the gear meshing on the lathe was somewhat improved. With the 58T gear, 34TPI is achievable. Although not much practical advantage since 0.75mm pitch works well enough, it passed an afternoon. thread_34tpi.jpg

    Is that a burner cleaning device you've built? Compressed air through the burner while heating with other means?

    That's the plan - it's missing the compressed air at the moment.

    Finally got it connected together and connected up to a compressor...
    The burners I have are all clear, so I'll have to wait a while to use it in anger.
    Most of the fittings are off the shelf - the hex bar was threaded on the lathe, and I had to rethread the tubes which were 1/8 BPT to 1/8 BSP
    Any recommendations for input pressure - I ran air through it at 30psi and apart from being a bit leaky, it was OK.

    Hi @Murray, 30 psi should be good to get ignition of the coke within the burner. Once ignited the reaction is heat -producing so cut back on pressure or external heating to slow down the reaction.

    Hej @Murray,

    I cannot help you with the thread, because I don't need one for installing the burner. I only slit a copper pipe and fix the burner with a clamp.

    That doesn't look nice, but works quite good. I can install small 1 pint burners and also the larger 2 pint burners.

    I do not use the compressor but the pressure face of my vacuum cleaner. That also works good.
