Hello, I have an MSR RapidFire which unfortunately has a failing o-ring - it leaks where the cannister attaches. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement o-ring? Or the specifications for the o-ring? Thanks, Scott
Welcome to CCS. First I would try contacting MSR at ... LINK E-mail: consumer@cascadedesigns.com Tel: 1-800-531-9531 Fax: 1-800-583-7583 Address: 4225 Second Avenue South Seattle, WA 98134 U.S.A. Hours of operation: Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Their customer support is really good. After that I would try an auto parts store for a fuel resistant o-ring (Viton 1st, Nitrile 2nd) of the same size. Ken in NC
Thanks Ken. I did contact MSR already. Unfortunately, they don't carry parts for this stove any more. I will give the auto parts store a try, thanks.
That's amazing. I have gotten K jets from them for my GK, and they say they don't have parts for the RapidFire. Simply amazing. Maybe call again, and get somebody different. @Hazet emails them and gets great service, within a few days even. Just make sure that you tell the auto pars store counter guy you need fuel resistant o-rings. He will probably bring the tray out, mine does, and I pick the one I need from a whole bunch of sizes. My RapidFire O-ring leaks in cold weather, below freezing. Is this normal? It's really scary. I warmed up the valve under the campsite restroom hand-dryer and then it was ok for my second attempt. In warmer weather it has been fine, but I'm a little nervous about it as it's the original O-ring. Can anyone tell me what size replacement O-ring I should get for it, please?
A super helpful person at MSR (Cascade Designs) found the details for me: AS-568A size -008 (that's dash 008, it's the size specification) nitrile durometer 70 Shore A
MSR does not appear to be that helpful, anymore. I have a Rapidfire that needs the O-ring replaced as well where it attaches to the canister and I am trying to find a source. MSR will not ship me the necessary replacement part(s) for this stove. I would like to replace the spring as well and and the other O-ring as I rebuild this stove that is unusable because of the O-ring need. This stove is a fabulous stove that MSR no longer makes. I guess it was replaced by the Windpro and Windpro II. What I would really like to do is replace the whole lindal connection and valve with a more modern version found on the Windpros but would be happy just to replace the O-rings. Does anyone have a source for the O-ring mentioned above? I would like to replace it and get a few backups as well. Also, there doesn't seem to be any support on the site for this stove, either, at MSR. So, when I contacted MSR they will not ship the parts and told me that I have to ship it to them for EVALUATION. I know it is NOT still under warranty as my original Warranty was like for 5 years when I bought it a couple of decades ago. I was told that there is at least a couple of months turnaround and that they would contact me and tell me if they could repair it and what it would cost me. I have also seen other threads where they are no longer supporting this stove. I have an RMA number, but do they hae ANY intention of repairing this for me? And even if I get it repaired and spend the money, those O-rings will be necessary going forward as normal maintenance. I'm bummed and disappointed in MSR for not being clear with me on my stove up front. I am wondering if there are safety concerns with this stove that they are not telling me about... any thoughts?
Send it to them for repair. Or..........find some correct size oring. I had my Windpro II back in under a month, took 6 months to get a RA. Unfortunately the gassie stoves don't appear to be intended to be classics like Swedish stoves. Duane
Can you pull the old o-ring? Measure it? O-rings are standardized. Buy a Viton o-ring of the same size? Or, go to the auto parts counter and get a fuel safe o-ring from the bin that matches. All of that assuming that several calls to MSR might (NOT) get a real customer service rep. Ken
At my second attempt, I bought a packet of what I think are the right size. I'll try them out this evening if I can stay awake that long. If they fit, I'll PM you, could either send you a few or tell you where I bought them.
I actually found what should be the correct actuator O-rings. They are sold in Umbria, UK, at Needlesports... They aren't that much, however, the shipping is a lot... MSR RapidFire Actuator O Ring (419714). I will order a few of them. If you would like the correct one when I get it them, I can mail to you.
Thank you, OakNJ This is what I bought (ignore the picture): 10x Size 201 Nitrile Buna Rubber 70A O-Ring 1/8" Cross Section 3/16" ID 7/16" OD | eBay nitrile buna rubber 70A, 1/8" xsection, 3/16" ID. I fitted it, and then submerged it in cold water, and saw no bubbles, yay. They look very slightly bigger (thicker) and feel slightly squishier than the old one. The old one is over 21yo so I'm guessing it could have hardened and shrank a little with age. Do these dimensions match what you were looking for? PS that shop looks awesome! I was in Keswick 3y ago, if only I had known!
Per Naomi: A super helpful person at MSR (Cascade Designs) found the details for me: AS-568A size -008 (that's dash 008, it's the size specification) nitrile durometer 70 Shore A So the specs for a -008 are 3/16" ID, 5/16" OD I just found these on ebay...
Oh good, that's exactly what I bought then. (My first attempt at buying -008 resulted in something else.)
Omg, I tried to post what I had bought about 2 hours ago. It's pending moderator approval, maybe because it has a link to the big online auction site beginning with e and ending with bay. This is the successful second-attempt purchase. From Nelson Audio, via the site mentioned above, without the hyperlink: 10x Size 201 Nitrile Buna Rubber 70A O-Ring 1/8" Cross Section 3/16" ID 7/16" OD They look a tiny bit larger than my old o-ring, but the new one fits and passed the submerge-in-water leak test. I'll bet the old one has hardened and shrunk.
@Naomi I would not trust the nelsonaudio o-rings. Nitrile Buna is not as fuel and heat resistant as Viton. The size(201) is also incorrect(not 008) with an OD 0f 7/16"rather than 5/16". There's a link to an ebay auction(BIN) in my previous post.
Thank you guys for all the help with this. Naomi, if you happen to get it to work, I would love to buy one off of you. Your source on Ebay might be much less expensive than getting from the UK. I love my little MSR Simmerlite from around 1990? It is an older one without the shaker jet technology, so even if I get the much-loved Rapidfire up and running I still might want to get the Windpro II. What went wrong with your Windpro II that you needed to send it back to MSR for, HikerDuane? Naomi, if you get yours up and running please let me know if it working correctly in colder weather.
