Some of the stoves I am selling for Kerry Leslie’s estate are fitted with a filler cap that has a Schrader valve. I’m assuming Kerry may have run these stoves on butane or propane at some point. See also here. Is there a thread for how this system operates? Thanks in advance. Tony @teckguy_58
Surely not propane? What about air? Are you sure it wasn't hooked up to an air compressor to save pumping? And if so, are they a fixture of the stove or were they a workshop fitting, used on whatever stove was being fettled?
I remember @presscall running butane. The Schrader valve is more likely for pressurizing with a bike pump or CO2 cartridge inflator.
It was one of his lanterns that had the filler cap with a Schrader valve. It runs fine on Coleman fuel without a jet change. Cheers Tony
I can't explain the tag. Maybe? There is another use for a Schrader valve- as a pressure test access point. TBH I'd consider selling the valved caps separately and exchanging them for plain caps on the stoves and lamps you are selling.
That looks like an Amish fuel cap. I think Old Coleman Parts still sells these. They allow you to pressurize using a bicycle pump. ….Arch
That’s right, a Coleman 501 (Frankies/Mods/Hybrids forum HERE). To avoid the appearance of a shrader valve on the filler cap and maintain the look of the standard cap I incorporated a Coleman check valve to facilitate filling and closure in use. That wasn’t necessary as it turns out. A kerosene jet would restrict output on butane significantly, but a gasoline jet not so much.
Yep, it sure looks like a cap designed for using a bicycle pump. But I suppose he may have had another adapter that allowed the transfer of butane though it. He struck me as clever that way.

Er isnt a shrader valve held closed by a spring and the cap firms a backup seal? Isn t using it to hold in pressurised Lpg interesting in a bad way?

As Jim Lukowski says, butane pressure is low. In fact, anything at a reasonable temperature, even for a fount, will be under the anticipated air pressure put in by the pump. Think of the build of butane canisters and then think of a stove fount. But propane/lpg, no. Try NOT to think of that! And I feel the advice here would be split along similar lines to the Optimus 111b. Test all the NRVs and seals every time, vs "don't even think of it."
