DIY Bowl Heater

I already had a perforated heater dome from Parafinalia when I came across a hand beaten stainless bowl from a charity/thrift shop for 20p. The bowl was the right size to make a bowl reflector and so off I went to the workshop.

Using an old SVEA 5 that was on coffee duty, I modified the heater dome to fit the top of the SVEA legs by brazing a short tube section and two half tube sections. It slides onto the top of one leg and rests securely on the other two.







Next I cut slots into the bowl so that it fitted vertically onto a bend at the top of one of the legs' and pop riveted two brackets to take a securing nut and bolt. The nut and bolt secure both the reflector bowl and the 'safety' guard on the same leg.

Following photos from here and from the internet, I constructed a guard from fence wire, heated, bent and brazed using a Bullfinch brazing torch. It was fabricated and fitted onto the SVEA in stages to make sure it sat properly on the legs, and that the securing arm slid down the inside of the reflector bowl.



Assembly is straightforward; guard first, then heater dome then reflector.

Excellent conversion, what a perfect size and fit! I particularly like the way you have replicated the seating method for the dome that Burmos used (here). I was going to say just as good as the Burmos attachment, but on reflection I think yours looks neater

@igh371 The brazing is not too neat, and still needs cleaning up.
However what is neat (IMHO) is that I cut the outside end of the tube section (shown below) with a hacksaw so it slides easily on to the leg top, but the other end of the short tube was cut with a tube cutter and so is partially domed so it cannot slide too far onto the leg top.

Looks really good but be careful with galvanised steel and it getting too hot, it will give off very poisonous fumes if it gets up to a point where a white ash can be seen on it, Its the same when you weld galvanised metal you should use a respirator. Its not the best products for hot environments to be honest.
