A member of my bike club has a primus stove for me and he says that it has "No 1" stamped on it. I'm not familiar with a No.1 so i thought I'd save myself the hassle of trawling for info and ask here what its foibles are, also what are its nice features and/or drawbacks? Cheers GC p.s. what's it worth?
Model: Primus 1 Fuel: kerosene Model: Primus 1 (S) Senior Fuel: kerosene Isnt these stoves practicaly identical with No 5 and 5S? Pro: Workhorse, easy to repair Con: Leggs permanent.
Yes, as far as I have seen and read, the 1 and 1Sr are identical with the Primus 5 and 5Sr except for the type burner. The difference is, however, that the 1 and 1Sr came with roaring burners, whilst the 5 and 5Sr came with silent burners (according to the Primus Catalogue, http://www. )... Otherwise I don't think that there are any differences between 1 and 5... (the 1Sr and the 5Sr had 2 1/8 pints tank, and the 1 and 5 had 2 1/4 pints, and they differed about 1/2 hour in burning time) Regards /J?rgen
Regarding the value: It is difficult, since some people are ready to pay about USD70 or more for a mint-condition stove in original box, but here in Sweden you can, if you are lucky, find it from 50 SEK and up.. (that's about USD 7. and that is also not a stove in good condition...) The easiest way of finding some kind of market value, is to have a look at e-bay or similar... I have two Primus No 1 Sr, and I paid 70 SEK for one, and 120 SEK for the other (about USD10 and USD17) I have a Primus 5, for which I paid 165 SEK, that's about USD 23... So it varies with the condition of the stove, knowledge of the seller and buyer, and how good the buyer is to get a better price... My favourite buy is one of the Primus No1Sr, for which the seller first wanted 270 SEK, but I talked him down to just 70! My girlfriend always get embarrased when I begin to bargain with the sellers... Regards! /J?rgen
I had to laugh when I read that. My wife does the same, only she calls me a "Blue Eyed Arab" when it gets down to the hard bargaining. At the swap meet north of me each weekend there's an Afghan family who sell all sorts of used and new things they import from Afghanistan. I bargain with the oldest son, and we're getting to be quite good friends. He says I'd do well in some Afghan mountain village selling things, because I can haggle without getting upset. His wife makes the most delightful tea you can imagine. They get more Americanized every day. The ladies, except Grandma, have stopped wearing the near total head scarves, and long, shapless dresses and have gone to just a little hat, and a blouse and longish skirt. (Fashion report for the ladies.) Wonderful folks. Gerry
No no! I was only joking I posted this message around the time of a debate on the forums about 'guests' asking for valuations. I've gone sooooooo far past the stage of counting the cost of my stove addiction that it's scary. GC
Hey Onepot, The difference is between a collector asking: "I added this to the collection, what is it and did I spend too much/too little?" and the seller asking: "What's it worth?" We all beleive that your the first. Don't we? Iain The Spirits know what you mean. Don't they?
The bad thing is that I've lied so convincingly to wife, family and friends about how much some of the stoves cost, I've forgotten the actual costs GC
I have the luck that I haven't had to prevaricate yet. Omission yes, prevaricate no. Iain May the Spirits not be watching when you tell the sgnificant other.
OK! Sorry, I didn't see the delicate sarcasm in your beautiful formulation, I am from Sweden! And you're right, there is a difficulty in remembering the cost... I have although managed to keep a good picture of the money I have spent on stoves, but I reckon that is because I haven't been collecting for more than 4 months... but what the heck.. I agree with the saying that "Moderation is for monks...", even though my beloved fiancee don't... I managed this weekend to cut the price for a Primus No 5S:or to half of what the seller wanted, but did my girlfriend appreciate that?? No, she didn't!! The only thing she asked was: "Why!?"... Well... to a certain extent I think I know what she mean, it was the third stove this weekend... Keep it burnin' folks! And may the spirits be with you, both methylated and others...
