Has anyone else had this problem with stoves like 8R etc where if the tank has been empty for a while and the wick has dried out, then the performance of the stove when first used is reduced? I have noticed that if I take such stoves (or 123R etc) and they have not been used for a while (stored with dry tanks), then when first fired up the stove pulses, coughs, generally is reluctant to work properly. Let it stand for a few hours and all is well. I am assuming it is the wick that is not 'wicking' as efficiently as it should after being totally dry. Am I correct? Alan
Yes I suspect Ideally you need to fill that type of stove and leave for a few mins for the wick to 'wet' before lighting. Alan
@G1gop my stesco definitely suffers the same. Performance is an order of magnitude better after the wick has had an overnight soak. Since the wick is sealed in for life I can’t get at it to see if it’s burnt at all. Regards John
After fueling a dry Svea 123, or the like, if you crack the valve open a bit, and hold the stove upside down while warming it with your hands, fuel will soon seep out of the jet. At that point, the wick is as saturated as it will ever get.
I suspect priming a stove such as a 123 or 8R for which the wick is dried out or not had time to saturate properly can do more wick damage than the occasional running dry. When a stove runs dry the flame gradually weakens but there is still fuel evaporation from the wick, and thus some heat dissipation. Priming a dry stove is essentially putting a match to an otherwise dry piece of cotton.
Afaik the 'Good condition' wick doesn't need much time to be wet fully. After replacing the new cotton wick, I didn't wait any extra minute but worked very well.
I have recent experience of wicking with kerosene. and I tested a length shredded cotton string like the above before using. A 12 length with one end dipped in kerosene (no pressurisation) wicked to the other end in 15 mins. It may have been quicker as I didn’t stand over it. When another piece was fitted into the stove, after the tank was filled and pressurised I got a continuous stream out of the jet in about 2 mins. Clearly, this depends (amongst other factors) on the length and type of the wick, and it’s packing density.
