I have only been into stoves for a short time, I have a Russian Touristy PT-1(8R clone) An Optimus 8R, An Optimus 111, a Russian Ogonek and a Coleman 424 dual burner and a Parasene 2pt collapsible.
Now I find myself looking at a British Army no 12 stove and its £399, Is that a silly price or is that normal for them. And am I an Idiot for even considering buying a stove for that sort of money? Over to you :lol::lol:

There are those for whom acquisition of an object is far more important than the few shekels they might pay for it,,, and others who are their polar opposite…

Value is based on what a seller asks, and a buyer will pay; opinions of others play little role in it…

I agree with Haggis on that one. If it's worth it to you, it's worth it.

Be patient, that model I think has sold for less. Depends on condition.

That’s right, but still touching £300.

They’re an ok stove, but I’m not a fan of the burner. It’s output’s disappointing for the racket it makes and the stove is large and heavy but still only a single burner. The Optimus 111 is far better.

But that’s sensible talk. If it’s a ‘heart’ thing, then that assessment won’t carry much weight.

A Tilley Sportman Kit has not sold on ebay. Rare?
I have seen prices of 2500 and 1500. Not completed sales, but... who knows.

Being from the colonies I had to look up "quid" and found out it's that same as a "smacker" which cleared things up.

People like me, dragged up on a council estate still use quid instead of £, not all the time but quite often. Smacker I think was an old east end of London term for £, Although I know what it is I don't think I have ever used it, Bit before my time, second world war spiv talk, I think I remember them using it in the TV series Dads Army.

Yeah, I had to look it up too. I thought it was some weird decimal thing, back when Schillings and Pence and all that stuff reigned supreme. Everything was pretty much knackered after 1971 that, eh wot?

I say bring back the guinea. Doctors and lawyers used to invoice in guineas. Very high class!

California was never a colony...not of Britain, anyway.

    Hiya Team,

I have paid around NZ $600.00 for an Optimus 199 stove. Am I nuts? Please don't tell my wife ☺

Well said Haggis. Have been contemplating buying a No. 12 myself. In a years search not a single example for sale this side of the pond. Add $100 shipping to the price for the ride over from the UK & makes it even harder. But something about the quality, & all that stainless, find very attractive. Even if it does have a shortcoming or two, quite a package. Guess I qualify for silly too, but I do want one.

I don't think I'll be buying super rare stoves. I like mine to be somewhat "affordable". And I have plenty of other hobbies that consume vast amount of my discretionary spending: *cough* old cars *cough*. And I need to restore/get working some of my old bicycles as well.

As always with any hobby/collection/money pit if something actually sells at a high price, then it not overpriced. That's its market value at that moment in time. Someone thought it was worth that much money. If it is listed for several months without selling then it's overpriced.

Final thought. I hope you are telling your significant others what you are actually paying for the rare and/or expensive stoves. You want to make sure they know to sell them for the proper amount when you're gone and not just dump them for peanuts.

I turned a No. 12 about 18 months ago for much less. Keep an eye on local auctions that aren't specialist. Nice No.2 though

Not sure I necessarily agree with that. Some items have a relatively small 'fan base' and it can take time for the right interest to come along.
It may also depend on the knowledge of the seller and how they present it; a Comet No.6 described as old brass thing slung in a box may not reach a high price.
As an example, I bid on and won an old canvas "tent" a few years back, paid £6 for it! Got it home, pitched and evaluated it and realised it was a drive away awning, likely for a VW T2.
Put it on the bay for £200 and it sold after a while of waiting.
Buyer was delighted with his find and then told me it was a genuine Westfalia accessory. A while later I saw it advertised for £500.
Each of us added appeal to it by applying our knowledge to market it to a more specific group, and the price rose accordingly. I gambled on it being complete and working it out, the next guy recognised what it was and maybe knew what they were "worth". I made a much bigger percentage uplift than he did!
