Hey, Maxbug, I have found the 199 to be at it's best with kerosene. Thoughit does great on Coleman Fuel, too, kero is best. I like Meths in that stove, too, but it's dead last in the power department, when compared to kero and CF. I have two 199's and two Ranger #10's. I keep one 199 setup for kero, and the other setup for Meths, and sometimes CF. For my user #10, it's kero, ONLY!! So far, never had a problem with overheating with the #10, as I don't use it with really large pots. Hope that helps. God Bless! Every Good Wish, Doc
I lit my 199 with the tank cap slightly loose once, kero came out the from under the cap when the stove built pressure, it collected in the base of the tin and ignited. The more it burned, the more the pressure built and the more fuel flowed out. I stopped it by cooling the tank carefully with cold water. It was scarey. I hate to think what would have happened if the fuel was white spirit. I would never use white spirit in any stove with a "bucket" like base again.
A few years ago I saw some clueless uni students try and light a Nova on kero without any preheat. Kero everywhere. Im glad they wernt using white spirit but I think a bucket design would of resulted in a much smaller more controllable fire than 3 square metres of burning petrol inside a snowbound hut. If the available options are 50% and 0% chance of saving your nights accommodation Ill take the 50 but the real moral is lean how to use stuff before using.
Is Optimus Ranger a good stove? Never heard of these as I am more dedicated to 111's. Never seen a Ranger either. Anyone want to know if I find one while looking 111's?
The Ranger 10 is a great stove as long as you stay within its safe operating limits which to me is a 6" Pot/Kettle running on Kerosene ONLY. The Ranger 199 is more forgiving to larger/odd shaped vessels and has treble-fuel adaptability. Both have fairly short burn times but then you won't be using either under a Hestia Oven for a 3-course meal Alec.
Yes! I would want to know if you spot a decent one. The 10 Ranger is the one I miss - and still haven't got in my little collection of smaller Optimus stoves...
bump OLD THREAD I've just re-reviewed some things and want to share some rough details while i'm thinking of it: 1957/58 the 8R came out 1957/58 from what i've found. 130 x 130 x 80mm, steel case [fyi there's a 2002 8R in gallery] 1973 the 99 was "New in 73" 125 x 125 x 80mm, aluminum case [so far, the 99 ends by time 199 came out] 1983 the 199 Ranger: "presented" new in 1983, 125 x 125 x 100mm, (taller) aluminum case. 199 stove production may have stopped/ended in 91? when production out of Gnosjö went bust. 199 not offered in c. 1993 catalog <-that as context: Several years later the No. 10 Ranger was launched, Most... were sold to Norway. 199 "parts" on 1995 parts list [this is not to say 199 stove was or was not offered, the parts were]. 1996 No. 10 Ranger: 125 x 125 x 80mm, steel case, a "1996" parts diagram is earliest date related to No. 10 Ranger that I'm aware of. -and- ...the size is identical to the 8r, both the tank and the the case. All of the above are small case w/same small size tank: 0.2L, 1/3 pint. (vs say the No.111 tank: 0.5L, 1 pint. and large case 172 x 172 x 105mm) 15,100 views
The 199 is my favourite stove, I love it! I use it every morning for making Turkish style coffee. I also bring it along when I go walking/snowshoeing in the woods for heating up water for tea or soup. I like it so much that it has it's own small wooden table and served as deco in a room
