Morning, Ken, I am embarrassed to admit that I forgot to continue with the testing I was doing!! I had to do some major house cleaning, and everything was boxed and put down into the Hobbit Hole, where it remains to this day!! Dang it!! However, I HAVE used the #80 mesh in several other stoves, at the last CASG, and it's worked wonderfully, so far. I'll dig out the box of #100 stoves, and continue the tests I began back then, after Thanksgiving. Then, I'll post the info here, if it is different than the results I'm already having with other stoves. Sorry about dropping the ball on this one...... Take care, and God Bless! I only have one No. 96 and it came to me without mesh. It seems to work but I have no idea how well until I can find some brass mesh. Now that I know about it, I'll source some out and do a test burn (boil 1L timed) with each and see if it does make a difference. Stan

Some years ago I acquired a 96 and its worn lipstick gave lots of yellow flames. I was too scared to peen it, thinking I would ruin it for good, so I ordered a replacement lipstick from someone on the 'Bay. This replacement has no brass gauze in it, but rather what appears to be some kind of cotton (?) wadding. Yet it seems to operate fine, burning nice and blue. Then, since I had a backup, I peened the older lipstick and now it also burns blue nicely as well. Yes, I now pics would be much appreciated. I'll try to get at that one of these days. Tom

I started to put asbestos and fiberglass cloth, but thought companies stopped using asbestos completely. I not saying I'm right, that was just an assumption. But asbestos was used in the generators of lanterns prior to 1950's I believe. My time frame may not be 100% accurate.
Hello, new subscriber here. I know this post is rather dated, but would there be anyone out there offering brass mesh for sale for the Primus 96? I’m looking to update mine, and the mesh could use replacing. Thank you for your help!
Welcome. What kind of shape is yours? If just sooted up, it can be cleaned in hot vinegar for 20 to 30 minutes, then brushed with a brass bristle brush. I've only had to replace a few over the years that were in bad shape. Duane
When I was afraid to peen my 96's lipstick I bought a replacement lipstick off the 'Bay. It came with a removable jet AND inside was a "cotton" filler instead of the usual brass mesh. It seems to work OK in the 96. However I did then get up enough nerve to peen the original lipstick and now that works great as well. Any comments on the stuff in the replacement? Tom

Bill is in the mail. After the vinegar soak, gently brush both sides and directions as needed. You may still loose a strand or two, no precise size needed to work. I've even forgotten to replace the mesh one time and the stove still worked. Shove the cleaned mesh to the top of the burner, a firm fit will keep it there, sometimes the mesh has to be tightly rolled. Forgot, I soak the mesh unrolled in a circle if able. It's not rusted steel which would break apart so don't be afraid to unroll it to clean. Duane
