I think this maybe the first version of the 8 judging by the fuel cap/SRV. It's another nice piece in the timeline of my 8/8R stoves.

SRV is located on the inside of the cap on this early version. The fuel pipe is soldered to the tank so replacing the wick would require desoldering.

The underside still has the lovely nickel finish. A pity the top isn't in the same condition.

Interesting to see how the logo stamping was soon reversed on the lid presumably to be the correct way up with the lid open.

I've just been told these early stoves have no wick and indeed having just checked with a small LED there isn't one. I'll have to make sure I filter any fuel I'm putting in (my normal practice anyway).

If you replace the wick in little later models you may find they are wrapped with some screen. Good collection so far.

@worth knowing Duane. I keep screen for my 96 stoves so that wouldn't be problem. Thank you.

I bought a large sheet of brass mesh to use on my Primus 96 stoves, but mostly just clean up the old piece and put it back. Has come in handy on at least one old Coleman stove or lamp, lantern. I think the Euro stoves are a great lesson in how stoves and lanterns work or at least get a working knowledge on other brands also. Some appliances need a little knowledge of their parts to be able to take them apart and their function.

@hikerduane I completely agree - what I've learnt from restoring European stoves has given me a good working knowledge to apply on my restoration of other stoves and lanterns.
However some of the thinking on Coleman gear is very different (and very clever) and it really needed breaking them down and rebuilding to appreciate how they work. I gained a healthy respect for the engineering in them.

I have so many 8/8R's, I had to make notes as to what or where embossings were on the tin so I didn't repeat a buy.

    My Svea pocket magnifier
    Svea pocket magnifying glass.
came in very useful today. I was able to see with the aid of an LED torch that this early 8 does actually have a wick. There is just a short length of wick visible from the end the the fuel pipe - which clearly I missed first time without the aid of a magnifier.

Are the wicks supposed to be about 4'' long, like on the 123?

I'm not sure but I'm fairly sure this isn't as long as it should be. It proved virtually impossible to photograph but this was the best I got.

Short wick or not there's nothing wrong with the burn on this 8.

The first version of the stove is very good.

Let me introduce you to the fireplace.
