    Hi,

I am seeing some declared 413G stoves, one of which has the fuel filler cap pointing against the stove, the other 41G3 stove has the fuel filler cap on the side of the tank. Is one tank a substitute, if so, my guess would be the tank which has the middle fuel filler cap.
Perhaps for the run of 413G's Coleman changed the filler location on the tank? If so, I would think this would then be a different model number.

The tank with fuel cap towards the case is later production, '77 to '80.

I think they put the filler cap in a place where you'd have to take the tank off, and lean it on a flat bottom with the generstor sticking up at a 45* angle, just so you didn't have the urge to fill the tank while still attached [and in idiot mode] still burning.

"Idiot mode" or not, that's why the change. It's a safety measure given the volatility of the fuel. In my view, a wise one, because these suitcase stoves were used by millions in campground situations, where kids were using them, along with adults who may have got them out once a year at most; and likely much less frequently.

When I refill these, I take the tank away from the table, with a grandkid or two, and explain the issues pertaining to the fuel.

It's a variation on the care that goes with an alcohol stove: even a smart person may put fuel in to a burning stove because he thinks the flame is gone. The consequences with white gas are worse.

Great, thank you very much. i was aware of the "safety feature" but was surprised then changed the location of the tank filler cap position without changing the stove model number & wondered when this took place year wise - to which hikerduane replied. Thanks again!

Coleman also changed the placement of the tank mounting slots and tabs, too. So you have to be careful mounting a tank from a different Letter model.
This could be worked around with a mini cutting wheel on a Dremel, but it's a lot of bother.
