SVEA No. 5 cleaned up

    I picked up this Svea No. 5 stove at a car boot sale in 2019 for £10 if I remember correctly. At the time I dismantled it, identified the replacement parts I needed and ordered them. At some point after arrival I "misplaced" half of the dismantled stove parts and it sat in its box in a dusty corner of the garage for nearly 3 years.

    A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across the missing parts, still sealed in the zip-lock bag I had put them in, so the project was back on! Having finished cleaning it up and reassembly, I figured it was time to take some photos and upload them. This site and forum has given me so many tips along the way, I wanted to share my progress so far.

    My stove came with a metal box, which I have only seen once elsewhere on a google search, on an old auction site photo. I assume it was after-market, but seems to have been constructed to exactly fit the stove. The box was very rusty when I got it, and the stove itself was very tarnished, the legs were fully rusty.

    I've tried to pick out all of the the detail of the markings on the stove in these photos - I would be interested in understanding its approximate age. My family and I do some 1940's re-enactment, so it would be nice to use this, but I do realise this is most likely post war, maybe 50s-70s?

    I have tried lighting it, with no success yet - I'm not convinced it's holding pressure well but this is based on zero prior experience. Some paraffin leaked out at the seal where the burner screws in (by the ring for the methylated spirit) - the seal is shot so I have ordered some replacement washers to resolve this. At least enough pressure was held to force the paraffin up and out!

    Hi. You have restored your stove very nicely!
    I recently worked on my Svea 5 which according to the photos in the reference gallery was estimated to be in the 30's.

    I've replaced the seal / gasket where the burner screws in, putting one gasket below and another above the primer fuel ring. it's all done up nice and tight.

    When I pump the pump, I'm not feeling any resistance or pressure as I might expect when pushing air through a non-return valve. The NRV is brand new, the leather cap is brand new and was soaked in engine oil before assembly.

    Even if I pump 30 times, there's no pressure in the tank. No fuel is leaking out and there is plenty in the tank.

    I have some other leather caps, maybe this one is a poor fit? I will be trying one out.

    Any other suggestions to check for no pressure?

    Update: Yes, there was a problem with the pump cup, but it wasn't the leather. The replacement cups I had bought came complete with the metal nut / bolt assembly. You can see this on the 3rd from last photo above. On inspection, I felt this was quite a loose fit against the shaft. They are supposed to slide back and forth in order to allow air back in on the upstroke, but this was so loose I felt it might not be getting a good seal on the downstroke.

    Fortunately I had kept the original parts. I refitted the new leather cup into the old nut / bolt and this proved to be a much better fit.

    Immediately I could tell that there was pressure when pumping, and when I tried it with the stove cold and the paraffin filler cap off, I could see and hear the paraffin being disturbed by the air being forced in.

    Also when pumping pressure with the stove cold and all the valves closed, a jet of paraffin flew up from the top jet into the burner cap.

    Pressure problems solved!

    I didn't quite get it lit correctly, the jet caught fire below the burner, so I've left it to cool down and will clean it up. One step at a time!
